Just wondering...and maybe complaining...this is my current status:

I know this is just the first day of voting but, I have 80 views...(why don't people vote when they view)...and 64 votes...but NO comments.

I really try and comment on most of the images I vote on (and I voted on 100% this time). Anyone have any insight on this? By the way...Good luck to all

to answer your question about views and voting.. a lot of people will come back to an image a few times to try and get a better feel for it before voting. Others will view the challenge entries first, then come back and vote later.. and others will just view them and not vote for many different reasons. (not being a member, not having a camera, don't feel qualified, whatever).

That's why there's always more views than votes. More so in the member challenges since non-members *can't* vote, but can look.

I would just be glad that people view but don't vote. I would far rather people spent time to consider their votes than simply rushing through committing their first reactions to the score.

Thanks to both of you, I guess that makes since, I have often changed my vote after I got through them all.

I go through from front to back in one sweep the night the challenge closes, assigning all images a vote of 4 or 6. The 6's are the above average pool, the 4's are the average and below, based on my initial reactions when I view the images.

I then go back and review the 6's, moving them up a step at a time as warranted, and occasionally down to 5. See below for my incremental sorting process.

When I have the top pile sorted, I go back and review the 4's, moving many to 5 and some down to 3. Occasionally a 2 or 1... Sometimes I don't finish the 4's pile, it depends how many entries there are.

Finally I go back and start viewing images again, commenting upon those that move me to comment. So in my case, high-rated images may have been viewed by me 3, 4, 5, or 6 times before I'm done with them, as I sort, since I sort upwards incrementally; move a bunch of 6's to 7, then some of the 7's to 8, and some of the 8's to 9, and some of the 9's to 10.

I have noticed that the better a picture does, the more disproportionate is its views-to-votes ratio. When views-to-votes is anywhere near equality, the picture is interesting very few people and is not going to do very well. When there are WAY more views than votes, that's usually a high-scoring image, and at least one that makes people come back and look at it over and over again, which means it stands out in some way.

So when I see thsi disparity, it cheers me up; even if the image isn't scoring that well, it's making people look. I am disappointed when I can't make them look. Which seems to be happening a lot, I might mention...

Weird, my current:

Avg Vote: 5.5652

Obviously your image is far more interesting in thumbnail than mine! I wouldn't have expected the big difference though...

Cheers, Me.

I think he's reporting from another challenge. I'm in the range with all the rest, and he's 4 times higher in views and votes? Hmmm.

Sorry! I wasn't paying close attention to the thread title, just that posting. Those are the stats from my "Best Of ..." entry. Here's the current stats from "Old and New"

What can I say except that I'm very happy right now! :)

Can I just ask how some of you interpreted one particular aspect of this challenge? The 'old & new', for my part, did not have to be the same thing.

Some of the comments I am receiving lead me to believe they had to be.

Guroos:

Details: Create an image showing a juxtaposition of old and new.

Nothing in that says they have to be the same class of thing to count. But what a voter decides floats his-or-her own boat is another thing. Maybe some people think it's too "easy" to shoot, say, an old sneaker on today's newspaper with the date prominently displayed...

If there's one thing I'm learning about DPC, it's that a significantly large percentage of voters operates with their own particular "filters" in place; they read the challenge, they get (apparently) a mental image of what a "good" entry would be, then downgrade anything that falls outside that conceptual box.

I suspect that it all averages out though; some people prefer bananas, some like oranges, in the end it all balances.

I submitted a lackluster pic after a 2nd idea I had bombed. I really wasn't pleased at all with it, but thought, what the heck. This is only my second challenge I've entered in the last year and I tanked in Architecture, so this is really boosting my spirits! yay.

I was at 6.2 earlier today, fell down to around 5.9, now it seems that I am floating around right where I am at. Wish I could get some comments, I am eager to get some feedback.

This is a rare instance where I want to change the title of mine. I was submitting at the last moment, and went with a title intended to draw a big black (mental) arrow pointing to how I met the challenge, but it turns out it's not necessarily the "best" title for this picture : )

My first impression was that the images should be the same thing just old and new, but after I started voting on them and saw some of the creative ways people (maybe you included) did this, I was mad at myself for not thinking more out of the box. I now know I probably could have done better with this photo I shot totally not thinking of the challenge (although now it has been combined from two pictures to one panoramic and colors changed). Old barn, new snow.

For anyone new or that doesn't visit or use this site often, it's probably not a good idea to chat about or link your entries during voting. :)
