I lost a raw file on my pc when I "Saved for Web". When I "Save As" the raw file is alway left behind so I guess I should have done that first. I didn't delete the raw file or anything like that it was simply converted to a jpg. I could have gone back in History while the image was still open, but I didn't know what had happened till after I had closed out PS.

Any way to recover this?

If I understand well, the jpg file was saved with the same name of the raw?, if this is the case you'll probably not recover it as its overwritten. If you had deleted, it would have been easier to recover. When files are deleted only a part of a header is deleted, but not the actual data part of the file (it remains on the disk).

Ok, so you opened the CRW file in PS. Then you worked on the resulting file and did a save for web. Correct so far? This would not overwrite the original CRW file.

Saving for Web shouldn't (and probably didn't) cause your raw file to be lost, since saving for web cannot save it to raw format. Even if you didn't change the filename, it would still be xxx.jpg and the original would be xxx.crw .

Are you sure it's lost and not just misplaced? Have you done a "Search"?

Also, if you haven't formatted your CF card yet you'll probably have a copy of the original CRW file still on it.

wrong. As soon as you save for web, if the file name is not changed during the save the file is overwritten.

That was a thousand images ago. I might have thought of that. Plus this is not a CRW. This came out of my 1Ds. The raw file is a Tif. on this camera.

Wrong. Save for web can only save as jpg gif png or bmp, and automatically changes the name to jpg by default. Theres no way you could have overwritten your raw file using save for web.

Photoshop's "Save for Web" option always creates a jpg file which will automatically have the .jpg extension in its name. It seems very unlikely that this process could have really overwritten your original .tif file. Do a thorough search of your hard drive, the original .tif should still be there.

If it's not, it doesn't sound like there's any way you can recover it. If that's the case, learn from this instance, and come up with a work-flow that starts with backup, archive, rinse, and repeat.

No, save for web will default to either .jpg, .gif, or .png. If you start with say CRW_1000.CRW when you click save in the save for web dialog it will be named CRW_1000.jpg. If you renamed it in the dialog to CRW_1000.CRW then it would have saved it as CRW_1000.CRW.jpg.

Or one of the other web formats like gif or png depending on what you've specified as default or last used.

This is not a CRW. I just tried this again with another image that I didn't need and it did the same thing.

You said it was a raw file in your first post. If you meant it was a jpg to start with then yes, you've overwritten it and it is gone.

As posted by several others, the only way to overwrite a file using save for web (or save, or save as, for that matter) is if you are saving to the same file type. If you started with a TIF, and saved to JPG, the original TIF will definitely still be there. If it is not, the save for web operation is not at fault. All it does is save another file with the same name, but a different extension. Both files can co-exist, even if they are in the same folder.

Edit: If you are using Windows OS, take a look in your recycle bin. If the file was deleted, not overwritten, it will be there and can be recovered.

No I said it was a raw file. The 1Ds saves as Tif. in raw mode. But I did a search of the whole system and found the original. Intact. The save had somehow moved it. I haven't a clue. This PC has 6 hard drives with over a terabyte of storeage so when you lose something there are plenty of places to lose it to. It somehow moved to a different file on the same HD. I think I just panicked because I had already entered this in a chalenge.

Thanks to all of you for helping. Thats what I love about all of you on this site.
