As a new photographer to this site, I must say that the rules that seem to be enforced on the contest, and the rules outlined in the rules section of the site do not agree. I was recently disqualified for the egregious sin of adding a copyright line to a corner of the image. Technically, this is not an image modification at all, simply a text overlay. But that aside, in no way do your site rules actually state that that is not a legal modification. The closest they come is to state that any modification must be a "whole image" modification. Well, for your information, in Photoshop adding text is a layer which IS APPLIED TO THE WHOLE IMAGE.
Thank you so much for providing a welcoming atmosphere for new photographers. I will be taking my work elsewhere henceforth, as I choose not to submit my work to a site which chooses to enforce unwritten rules in an arbitrarily nazist fashion!
It is apparent that you do not want this site to grow or mature in any shape or form, so I will just be moving along.....

Move along, Move along.... nothing to see here.

Godwin's Law aside, the intent of the spot-editing rule is to prohibit adding anything to the image file that was not already there, or removing anything that was there. This rule has been consistently applied throughout the life of the site.

That said, there has been discussion of reworking the rules and it may be worthwhile to specifically emphasize that the spot-editing rule does prohibit the addition of text.

This is perfectly understandable, but it should be readily apparent to the casual observer that text is not a modification intended to modify the artistic impact/merit of an image in any way.

If this is in fact the intent of the rule, then I stronly suggest that you indeed modify the rules to SPECIFICALLY call this out. That rule is currently so open to interpretation that I could argue that cropping an image is grounds for disqualification, as it does not truly affect the whole image. You need some clarification.

Well..copyrights are already mentioned in the site and are an unneeded addition ot a photo.

And if we start allowing watermarks or other identifying marks where will that lead?

If your work is so good to need these types of protection why come to a beginner, learning site like this? Seems a waste of time. :-/

The point of this discussion is not the quality of my work, good or bad, it is the clarity of the rules. This seems to have been marked and accepted by the moderators. So please keep your opinions on the quality of my work, or yours, or anyone elses for that matter out of the discussion.
On a side note, I'd like to thank the moderators for correctly interpreting the spirit of the post and taking note of my opinion on the clarity of the rule in question.

glyn, i'm sorry to hear you got DQ'd for some unintentional breaking of the rules. the rules are accepted by all, they are not made up by the moderators as they go along. in fact, we've had DQs for innocent mistakes before (rules are rules). it is upsetting to those photographers (and, btw, not fun for everyone else, either), but does not reflect on the photographer or on his/her work unless it was done intentionally knowing the rules would be broken, and no one suggests you did that.

the rules will be updated, the week will be over, and your work would be gladly seen by us in the next few weeks. don't quit so quickly.

if you want some critique of your photo, feel free to send me a message and i'd be happy to send you the kind of comment i would have left with your picture in the challenge.
