For christmas i got the wife's OK to go get a dSLR. Through exhausting research, I have come to the following choices, and need some help and input as my brain is about fried.

New Rebel, no lens, after rebate, $625.
can get another lens or filter now
New rebel, kit lens, after rebate, $707
get second lens now, and have fery little money for batt, filters, etc)
Used 10D, no lens, no rebate(duh) $750.
have to wait to add lenses

For either camera these items apply:
Total budget of about $800 now. My hobby bidget is maybe $50 a month.
I got as a gift from a friend a Tamron 28-80. I plan to get a Canon 50 1.8. and still want a 75-300 or so lens (figure $210 new). I still need misc things, PL filter, UV filters, second battery.

On suggestion i got was to get teh rebel and 2 lenses to get all the rebates tripled and sell off the lenses on eBay, so the camera would cost about $200 less ($425 or $507).

So what should i do?
Is a lightly used 10D with no lenses worth more than a rebel with a lens or 2?
Is it worth the hassle to resell some lenses on ebay (and get to try them out of course!!) so i can get more glass now?

Is patience a virtue? I have no patience! I know for some warranty means alot, but it is not that important to me. Unless of course Canon cameras are unreliable...LOL

Normally my response would be "look carefully at the diferences and determine whether the features missing on the Rebel and present on the 10D are important to you." In this case, where the difference is between having a workable system and not, I'd suggest getting the Rebel and kit lens, as well as possibly a 50/1.8, which can be had for about $75-80. I'd really not suggest going the triple rebate route, only because the company that processes the Canon rebates has a terrible reputation and is very slow, so you will be out the cash for quite a while.

That is a dilemma. I have a 10D and swear by it, but... the 300 is pretty neat too. I guess it gets down to money real fast. If you are doing casual photography the 300 is pretty good and seems to satisfy most owners. I wanted to go up to the 10D purely for the added manual features and the ability to take photos at a resolution that will make really clean 8x10's. If I hadn't had the money right at the time I was camera shopping.. the Rebel 300 would have been my second choice.
If I were in your shoes.. I'd get the 300 and some good lenses and a 512Meg CF card. If you got the 10D you'd be crying to afford good glass, which that camera deserves.

Good luck !
Rick

I agree with Kirbic. The differences between the two cameras are less important than getting good lenses.

Well, Prof, what a great position to be in, that move from the Fuji to a DSLR!

I can only suggest what I would do in a similar position, that would be to get the Rebel + 2 lenses. Why, you ask? Simple, they are virtually the same and if you want to Rebel to be a closer clone of the 10D, then download the firmware fix. A year or so with the Rebel, gaining experience with a DSLR, then you think about upgrading to either the new Rebel mkII when it comes out or to a 20D.

That's my opinion anyway, and I hope to be following your route very soon and upgrading. Best of Luck with your choice and I'm sure you'll love either camera!!

Good lenses...not so much good as more ;)
Not sure if i want the kit lens...the wider end is appealing, but i have the 28-80 tamron. And at $90 or so...i can get the 50 1.8 instead.

Later i want the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro Super II Tele Zoom at $210. I'd rather have the Canon IS lenses (28-135 and 75-300), but the cost is too much for now.

Are the cheap generic BP-511 batteries on ebay any good?

My neighbour uses them in his 20D and swears they are as good, if not better than canons batteries, plus they have a slight higher capacity?? so charge quicker! So he says.

I don't know what they have on ebay, but I ordered my extra battery from SterlingTek. $11.99 + S&H (I forget how much it was). It's worked great so far and it does last a little longer than the Canon battery as advertised.

Well, I bought a battery from a g brand "e-film" for my rebel, I paid 2/3 of the canon's cost and believe or not it has longer life than the canon.

I'd say go with the 300D. The 10D does have a few more features, but you need good glass and the 300D will leave you money to get that.

Digital Rebel 300D (Body Only) - $579 after rebate

512MB CF SANDISK Ultra II - $49.00

Canon 50mm f/1.8 USM - $75.00

Tamron 28-105mm f/4-5.6 - $145

All together comes to about $850. A little over your budget. But at least it gives you a decent amount of options.

i have heard nighmares about digital liquidators. Buydig/beachcamera has it for $618 (after rebate) and they seem to be a bit more reputable.
i have a 28-80. the CF card looks good, but i have a 256 for now.

Sound like great prices for the D Rebel. Great, ie. sounds too good to be true. Where did you get your quotes from?

WOW!! I did not know that about Digital Liquidators. I just saw the price and posted it. Good to know. THANKS!!

I've ordered products from the other sites I posted, ZipZoomFly and Adorama and never had a problem.
