Here are the photos I gave tens to in the yellow challenge in their order of finishing...

3rd Place

8th Place

9th Place

27th Place

36th Place

73rd Place

96th Place

103rd Place

108th Place

170th Place

Now....

Request #1

Don't use this thread to post the photos that you gave tens to in this challenge.

Request #2

Now that this challenge is over, I challenge you to take a look at these images again and see if you can find something interesting about them that you did not see in your voting process.

I would like to hear from anyone who scored any of these photographs at 5 or lower if possible. You don't have to say what you gave it but I'm interested in some discussion on why these images were disliked. Some of the higher scoring ones were definitely popular, but I have tens in this challenge that ranked all the way down to 170th place. I'm looking for insight.

Thanks :)

the duckie is kind of deja vu... ;)

But I want you to know that I still gave it a 9 ;)

A lot of these picture were above my 8 and some are in my 10s... so I agree with you that they are very nice pictures.

fount didn't do it for me though. not super sharp... kinda blah... gave it a 5

These were all 6 or higher for me. I would like to hear the discussion also.

I didn't vote in this challenge but would have voted all the images you listed above 5 besides the bike rider which I would have given a 5.
This shot achieved 5.4 which is probably what it deserved considering that most people don't like to see skin tones as yellow but otherwise it was a very good image.

Here were my scores on these: 9, 6, 6, 5, 5, 7, 4, 5, 6, 5

I love #1.

I thought#2 was ok, but I saw a couple more interestingly composed ducky shots that I liked better.

#3 is very well taken, but the composition was not overly interesting IMO.

I thought #4 was too busy. It just seems disorganized to me.

#5 is an impressive subject because it had to be difficult to take, but I just can't see it on my wall.

I went back to #6 several times. Had it had a sharp focus, it would have been one of my favorites.

#7, while a well taken photo, fell victim to the WOODY thing in my mind.

#8 just doesn't appeal to me. Can't put my finger on it.

#9 I probably should have scored a bit higher. I like the use of yellow throughout and the irony of the sign painted on the road. I tend to be initially more draw to artistic shots rather than journalistic shots. This one just didn't get the second look it deserved.

#10 looks over softened or over edited to me, especially on the right.

Well, thats my 2 cents as honestly as I can come up with. What are your thoughts?

I'm just looking at reasons that people don't like some images that I really like.

I would've given "10"s to all the ones pictures except:

"9" as not having the prominence of yellow. Maybe if it was done in negative mode :P

Only two of the images listed were 5 or below for me - and they are actually the two with the lowest positions. The rest were much higher.

#108 - seems to have 3 confusing subjects 1) The yellow sign painted on the street, 2) the bike rider, and 3) the walkers.

The area that draws my eye out of the frame is the distracting bright area behind the walker.

The biker seems awkward at that close to the edge - and the motion blur is in the middle - not enough to be really effective. It should be either really sharp or have more motion-induced blur.

Finally - the border is so large it detracts from the image.

#170 is very busy, very centered - and very little in focus. It is not selective focus as much of it is "almost in focus. There is a distracting blotchy area on the right side. The yellow border does nothing for me.

So - both of these images got 5's from me.

Not sure I know why you are posting this thread, but here goes:

Why isn't this on your top10 list? For me, this is a better image then the ones you've put in this thread. Is it because it's a new guy that you don't know?

abstract doesn't do well on DPC. I quickly scanned the winning images and the only time i stopped to see a winning abstract image happened to be in the Abstract competition. You usually lose a full mark for abstract compositions.

terje, I don't think the point of the original poster was to question every result in the competition. He wanted to highlight images that he gave consistent high marks but placed erratically in the competition. Which implies that either the Poster or DPC has an eccentric perception of what constitutes a good photograph.

Gotcha ;) I was just curious why didn't make his cut for 10.

This post is an incredibly interesting one. While voting on this challenge I steadily became more amazed at the quality of the submissions. When the results were released I had trouble figuring out what I thought was so special about the challenge - not to slight the winners, but a quick look at the first few pages, and I couldn't really remember what I was so enthused about. This post has, in one fell swoop explained why... Many of my favourite images just didn't do well, and were nowhere to be seen on the first few pages. JJbeguins entry was, I thought, the best shot in the challenge and, accordingly, I gave it a ten.

I also gave tens to the 170th place entry (this images finish is one of the most surprising I have seen here), the 3rd place entry, and the 27th place entry.

I didn't rate the ducky or the Tomatoes particularly highly - the rubber ducky shot was, well, a rubber ducky - I think I had rubber ducky fatigue by the time I arrived at it. I really Like the simplicity of the tomato shot, but at the time of voting there was nothing about it that jumped out at me (I just looked and it turns out that even that got a 7 from me).

Anyway, thanks for this post, it reminded me how many great shots don't always do well here - particularly encouraging for the times (and Im sure there will be many, when my submissions aren't doing so well).

I would say it's the latter.

Hehehe, it's probably worth having a look at John Seltzer's portfolio before questioning his photographic judgment to that extent.

I concur but I didn't want to appear overly judgemental.

Setz has good photography, but I wouldn't be disrespectful to the voters (in genereal us). There are always excellent images that never ribbon, it's the same for all challenges. I personally had #96th place image as a ribbon candidate. Then again, I also thought the #1th was a excellent photo that deserved a blue ribbon.

I just wonder why nobody said that the #1 was a 10 photo.

I wasn't being judgmental. In fact, I was trying to be non-judgmental by simply stating two possible alternatives and not suggesting which was correct. I'd rather leave readers to make up their own decisions ;)

And to add to one big pile of clarifications, I wasn't attempting to devalue the opinions of the dpc community at large, just pointing out that Setz's opinion is worth at least listening to.

I think there are two reasons no one has mentioned the winning entry - a) setz expressly requested this post be confined to the images he gave tens to and b) that particular image won - there aren't exactly a lot of people running around disappointed at where it finished :). For what its worth I thought it was an excellent shot and if I had come accross it during voting I likely would have extended a 9 or 10 in its direction.

Ok - to give any photo a 10 it has to be outstanding. IMO people give out 10's too easily, but that's only my opinion. I am pretty mean with my voting but if I see a good photo then I will reward it with a good mark. Firstly it has to meet the challenge, Its no good having a brilliant photo of a flag if the challenge is 'pets', lets not forget that the challenge's on this site are specific. I then look at the 'wow' effect, technical side, composition etc.

Anywho this is how I voted

1st place = 8
3rd place = 8
8th place = 7
9th place = 6
27th place = 5
36th place = 5
73rd place = 5
96th place = 6
103rd place = 6
108th place = 6
170th place - 5

5 is an average 'good shot' but nothing more than that

we all have different interpretations of what is, and what is not, a good photograph.

I agree with dsb_mac that abstracts dont do very well here but that will not stop me submitting them!

Noyone's saying the #1 photo isn't a 10 photo ;) I think most people would agree it's a wonderful photo! I think we're mostly trying to explore reasons behind huge result discrepencies in certain types or styles of images. Ok, perhaps the word "poor" was a poor choice of words on my part (pun intended). I'll change it to something like "eccentric" or "unusual".

I didn't vote...The yellowness bored me too quickly and I knew the last pictures I voted on would doubtlessly be voted unfairly. But here's what I would have voted (I usually end up giving 2 or 3 10's in a challenge):

First Snow - 7

Julie's Rubber Ducky - 9 (the contrast in the water itself doesn't suit the image imo and a more subdued range there would have scored a 10)

Fresh From Farm - 8 (nice food photo)

Yellow Streak - 9 (I fear that this is a photo that's easily overlooked and I might have done the same in my voting haste and scored it a 7)

Born Yellow - 6/7 (nice composition - wish for greater dof and more contrast)

Fount - 6 (not bad, but doesn't hold my interest visually nor speaks to me emotionally)

She loves the sunrise - 8/9 (really nice...)

Fallen - 7

untitled - 9 (I'm partial to street photos, especially ones with an ironic twist like this one)

Curves - 6 (I've got no problem with abstracts, but this one doesn't hold my interest or move my eyes like a photo called 'curves' should)

number 5 the 27th finish

is actually my pic
I am really interested to hear what everyone thinks
this was my first ever entry at a challange
the request that yellow is the impact of the pic was what I went for with the burst of yellow amid all the purple
to me it really caught the eye first
I am though really happy with 27th on my first challange
also how do you add the thumbnail pic links in the threads??
ok i have figured it out as you can see thanks terje

You did really well...I think that the photos here are often subject to speed voting, so subtleties don't often fare well. You've done well with a photo that doesn't capture the viewers immediate attention, but rewards him/her once the attention is given!
12/15/2004 08:42:31 AM · #25
I think this phenomenon of great artful photographs not doing well certainly lies in the scoring method. It's a system that rewards the most popular image not necessarily the best photograph. Sometimes the results are the same but sometimes it's really wacky. I liken it to when they do open polls of favorite movies. Like AFI's Top Movies where they have 2 lists one chose by experts and another by the population. They often differ drastically simply because most critics and directors wouldn't list Porky's Revenge as the BEST MOVIE EVER MADE!!! I'm not saying one is correct and the other isn't they're both valid points of view. But personally I'd rather lean towards an expert's opinion as to what something is worth not the total population. If I'm sick I go to a doctor. I don't ask Tom, Dick, and Harry off the street and follow their advice.

Don't get me wrong, I love DPC. It's the only site on the net that I actually poneyed up money for membership. But we could always improve it.
