In response to this thread, the description of the Bridges challenge has been changed. Sorry for the confusion.

As the heavens parted, the hand of the spirit came down among the people and made the change... The people saw that the change was good and there was much rejoicing throughout the lands...

If the "Numbers" challenge could be clarified a bit, we'd be 2/2 :)

Photographing a bridge for a reason was a real challenge. Now, it's just a straight shot of a bridge. Nowhere near as challenging. Shame, really.

No Jak, you know what people are like here on DPC. It´s not enough with a straight shot at a bridge to place. You must come up with something unique to get a ribbon.

OK, there were a lot of complaints first thing, but I'm just going to register my small disapproval of this. It's just because I liked the idea of trying to communicate something with a bridge photo.

I think we'll get a wider selection of photos though, which is a good thing.

you should always try to communicate something with your photos :)

I agree with the change. Personally I try my best in every challenge to communicate something with my pictures and I give point(s) for the message of a shot too. Maybe by having this 'say something clause' the submissions would be more interesting and unusual. But it would be very difficult to vote, when the message itself comes more and more into main focus. But please don't use this change to submit boring shots!

You most definitely SHOULD try to communicate something with your photos. However, not everyone does it as well as others. That's why the original idea behind this challenge motivated people to not only look a little harder for a good shot but also to give them a little sharper guidelines and forethought in their voting.

I must agree that I am dissapointed with this obvious sellout by the administration. For shame, for shame!! :-)

On the other hand, I too would appreciate a bit more guidance in the numbers challenge!

I prefer the change. The original rule was too abstract for me and I wasn't going to submit anything. I think there will be double the amount of submissions now because of the change.

Before we make a change that's being repeatedly requested next time, I'd appreciate the 'sellout' crowd e-mailing me to let me know where the line of 'selling out' is. Maybe we could start a council of people to vote on what changes, updates, additions, revisions, revamps are 'selling out', and which ones are legitimate causes for concern. Or maybe we just shouldn't bother responding to requests at all.

Drew,

Definitely don't "not bother responding to requests"... I think you made the right call on this one. Perhaps your idea of a committee is a valid one. As long as there were limits on changing the subject. One approach might be to release the topic to the committee maybe one hour before general release - That way no-one would really gain an advantage from hearing the topic early and you would have people not realising the topic has changed.

I would definitely support that approach, and since the topic comes out at 4pm Monday local time for myself, I'd be glad to help out.

If the committee idea is too complex then just set yourself a time limit (say 12 hours) to listen to responses before locking the challenge in - and make everyone aware of this process. My concern, though, is that you'd have a huge fight every week of people wanting the challenge changed because someone is always going to find something awkward or unappealing.

Regards,

Mark.

Putting the description controversy aside, I'm already feeling the pressure of this challenge. I mean, it'll be pretty sad if I do poorly considering that I live in Ambridge, PA, home of "The Bridgers." Not to mention that Allegheny County has one of the highest (if not the highest number of bridges in the country!

Pressure's good Alan, we're all waiting for you on that one ;-)

Personally, I don't think it will make that much difference in the submissions of most. I notice the challenge definitions are not always observed "to the letter" in a strict sense, even for photos that get a ribbon. I won't give examples, because I'm not trying to cause controversy over what has already happened, I just wish this could change in the future.

Actually, I just uploaded my entry, so I will indeed sleep well tonight! :) At least until I wake up tomorrow and decide that this shot sucks...

The current description does not exclude the bridge of a ship. :)

Or should I have said 'will open a whole new can of pigeons'?

I suppose the challenge also doesn't exclude a dental bridge either?
