I've been shooting for a while now with a Nikon Coolpix 5700, and have always noticed that the noise is rather high in low light, even at 100 ISO - but I'd normally just run it though Neat Image and call it done. Now that I'm submitting shots to stock sites, I'm getting a number of them rejected for noise- and if I run them through NI they get rejected for artifacts (that's even when saved with no compression). I've had it with the slow response and noise in this camera.

Here is an example of noise, from a shot I took Tuesday:

The first one is a resize of the entire shot, the second is a crop out of the full size image. Neither has any post processing. The flash was used.

After doing a lot of reading yesterday, I think I've decided it's time to move to a D70- I like the fact that it's so fast to turn on and has a big buffer, and I like the idea of low noise. I was wondering if someone could post some examples of the noise in low light at ISO 200? I'd particularly like to see a crop of the noisiest part of a fullsize image.

Any other tips/hints or drawbacks that folks can tell me about the D70 would be most appreciated. Thanks!!

Just when I was tyring to justify NOT getting a D70 you have to come along and the 'get one' side.

If it helps any, there is $100 rebate till month end. Ritz has a decent price and are reliable, and I think same price as Adorama.

I have to wait for budget reasons, but you have given me a bit more ammo.

I got my D70 a few weeks back an love it to bits, best camera i ever had and it will be with me for a long time, qualtiy iso200 settings is just fantastic.

the first should i done was a pic of my son at night with the little built in flash and this is free from any noise and grain, did a print on the Canon ip4000 printer on so so paper and this is now haing on the hallway for all to see. second to none (except those $9,000 bad boys :-()

I ordered mine from Ritz (no tax, no shipping, $100 rebate) two days ago! Should be here soon. I'm bracing for the learning curve as it has been 30 years since I last used a SLR. But can't wait!

good post...anyone who has night pictures at a 200 ISO with the D70, please post thumbnail. I just joined and have been obsessing on getting a D70 (as my bio dictates), and will do so in the next couple of weeks.

Still working on the wife...ANYONE WHO CAN PROVIDE COMMENTS TO HELP ME CONVINCE MY WIFE IS APPRECIATED!!

(PLEASE NOTE: Regardless of whether the wife is convinced or not, the D70 will be mine, oh yes...it will be mine. The benefits of convincing is to ensure the length of time she is upset with me is kept to a minimum ;-)

"Dear Santa Clause......"
I have been extra special good and won't ask for anything else this year. Could you please place a new Nikon under my tree this year?"
I'll be sure to leave some real homebaked cookies out for you this year.
Sincerly....

It will be much easier than you think. The transition from slr to DSLR with the D70 is second nature. Like riding a bike.

SALE!

It is extremely important to emphasize the SAVINGS. The price it costs to SAVE is irrelevant, only the savings is important.

"Honey, great sale on Nikon D70's right now through the end of the month. Automatic $100 savings. $100 dollars! That's money toward your new Holiday outfit. And think of all the film developing costs we will save. At least a couple of thousand dollars, enough money to take that vacation you wanted. $2200.00 in savings, its on SALE, AND we get a vacation. It will be here in a week. So start shopping for your new outfit."

That is how you do it. ;-]

Since Cameta is an authorized Nikon dealer, you may want to see if you still get the $100 mail-in rebate. I doubt it, but it's worth checking on.

For what it is worth! I absolutly love my D70. Best investment I have ever made. Since the end of Oct/04, I have already taken over 1000 pictures. Check out my website at www.DonnaRae.Smugmug.com, all photoes posted were taken with the D70..

An excellent thing coming from the 5700 to the D70 (I did too), is that ALOT of the buttons that you are use to (metering, exp adj., etc) are in the exact same place. Easy conversion.

if you're currently submitting images to stock sites, and getting noise rejections, the d70 will change that :) i was doing the same thing with my Fuji S602Z. now i hardly get any noise rejections.

moving up from a 5700, i think the d70 will feel quite natural to you. there's still gonna be a bit of a learning curve until you get used to it, if this is your first SLR, but I think you'll be extremely happy with it.

if you want to see how the noise compares, take a look at this shot of mine:
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=112427
that one was shot at ISO1600

i found that the noise at 1600, is even lower than my fuji was at 400.
