When you want to take a photo at night outside, how do you do it? Flash on or off? I have tried both, when using the flash it looks to "snapshot" like. With the flash off, you see nothing.

If you use a flash you will always get that flat snapshot look. You have to use a longer exposure time and a tripod to get a good image. Use the manual mode in your camera and play around with exposure times until you get a decent looking image.
Maybe start with 1 second and adjust from there. |

Try longer exposure and paint with a light. You will get some surprising results. Some great examples from Paint with Lights challenge. Some are true paint with light technique others are great examples of lighting capture.

| Stick the camera on a tripod, long long exposure id the only real way to do it. Of course your subject cant move, so the technique is not good for people / animals etc |

longer exposure times will do the trick, higher ISO will do the trick too, but a more lightsensitive lens can do the trick too I think!
