Not sure where else to post this so I put it in General. Wondering if this is a glitch others are experiencing.

When I download emails sent from DPC, they lock up my email program. I'm on Windows 10, I use Outlook. This only happens with emails from DPC, like when I'm sent emails notifying me of comments, or requesting validation, etc. The emails download just fine, but the minute I click on them the program spazzes out. It seems to be trying to connect with the server. More often than not I have to restart the program.

I can't delete the email because that requires I click on it, which is when it freezes the program.

Any thoughts?

Well that's unusual... though I will say that Outlook does seem to have some "interesting" behaviors, and lock-ups are not all that uncommon. Your situation, where the lock-up is repeatable and traceable to e-mails from a specific source is unusual though.
What *might* be going on here is that Outlook is trying to load a resource to display the e-mail (like a font, for example) and failing ungracefully. That would explain why it locks immediately when you click on the message, it's trying to preview it. Try the following test:
- Open Outlook
- On the Ribbon, click "View"
- Under the Layout/Reading Pane drop-down, choose "Off."

Now try selecting (but not opening) one of the DPC messages. Does it still lock up? If not, then my hypothesis is likely to be correct. Once you test this, you can then just reset your reading pane setting to what it was before.

Ok, I'll try this when I get another email from DPC. But it doesn't solve the problem though, does it. I rely on the preview pane...

Yup, that was it.
So if I want to delete messages from DPC I have to turn off preview...

Ain't technology grand?

You could report the bug to Outlook and see if they can fix it ...

It will need to be investigated from our end. Before I ping Mita on this, let me do a little more research on my own, see if I can see anything suspicious.

So, I think I have found the issue... I've never seen this because I have outlook set to ask before downloading images in emails. I get the text of the DPC emails just fine, however with "broken image" placeholders. Now, if I tell Outlook to download images for that email, I get the sme behavior you are reporting. If you wait a while, the "hang" should clear.
I will ping Mita and let him know about this, as it can be replicated and we know what the source of the issue is.

You are so amazing! Thank you! Whew.
In my case, however, it will sometimes hang indefinitely, which is a pain because I'll be in the middle of returning emails and I have to shut it down.

Here is a work-around:

Go to File>Options>Trust Center and click on the Trust Center Settings button on the dialog. In the left pane, click on the Automatic Download section. Check the appropriate boxes to prevent automatic download of images in emails.

This will mean that when you do want to see images in an email, you will need to right-click on any "broken image" icon in the email and select "Download Images."

Thanks. I have an easier workaround, since this is the only sender with which I have issues :) I always preview my messages on the server, so I just delete them there and don't download them at all.

Yep, that works too...
One thing to remember, if you receive high volumes of emails and automatically download the images, your local email storage can grow quite large quickly. If you regularly delete old emails, then that isn't a problem. I have emails from the late Paleolithic, so for me it is an issue.
There's also the issue of senders being able to track that you read an email based on the image downloads. This is a common tool used for monitoring the success of commercial emails, and it is defeated if the image is never loaded.

Good to know. But I do my pre-sort on the server, so those that I don't want never get downloaded.

I also have emails from Paleolithic times, tho....

Just out of curiosity from what year are your "Paleolithic" emails? I just checked mine and they start in May 1997 (!!)

Mita made a change that seems to have cured it for me. Would be good to have confirmation.

I have not been receiving any emails from DPC since December it appears. I have checked my filters to see if I had accidentally blocked it and I have not. They aren’t going to spam. Can someone check if there is an issue I am not considering?

Erin,
I see your email address references you own domain name. Who is actually providing the email service? Is it possible that the messages from DPC are being either blocked by your ISP or email provider, or being shunted into a commercial email or SPAM folder on the server before ever getting to your inbox?

It is gmail and I went out there to view on their end and it doesn’t appear to be. I sent a note about the White challenge entry - if there are issues with it is there a way you could message me here via messaging? I haven’t received any ‘your submission is validated’ notes for awhile.

Hmmm, the plot thickens... I'd assume that if gmail were blocking us, we would have a large volume of complaints, so I suspect this is not the case. Since you've verified that it's not going in a Junk/SPAM folder on the server, I don't know what to say.
I will make sure to send you a PM with validation results on White.
