Glanced at an image thumb on homepage and said something like “nice f22 shot” then decided to check and see if I was right. No EXIF info. Hm. Thought it was required all these years. Retired with too much time on his hands I counted entire homepage… only 8 of 15 images had EXIF.
We like to tell ourselves often that we are here to learn.
Carry on.

Originals submitted for validation are required to have EXIF data. Edited JPEGs submitted as entries are not, and the exposure data fields are optional ... personally I usually add focal length in the notes area, but that's not required either ...

Ask you need to do is ask. I entered my coffee shot at 11:58 last night. There were things I was still trying to fix at 11:59, so the exif info want filled in. Plus, if I do a save a copy in Photoshop, it fills in all of the exif data for me in dpc, and that's what I'm used to. But of it's more than 700k and I have to do an export to get it under the file size limits, then it doesn't pull in the exif, and so I may forget to add it in - since it usually does it for me.

So there are many possible reasons that the info isn't there. Just simply and politely ask -- if you're curious. Most people are happy to share their information.

Why the snark? Simply find the lack of this info counter to the “mission” of DPC. You were one of 7 and we have your explanation. Thanks.

Hmm...

I've been here seventeen years and never looked at anyone's EXIF info.

I 'spect we learn things other ways, too...

Wow -- I tried to courteously explain and to offer a suggestion. I've found people very helpful, and I've definitely asked people for info, hints, tips, etc. I'm sorry you read that as snarky. I see why people are afraid to comment or make suggestions. :(

I believe the reference is to the Aperture/ISO/Shutter Speed fields available on the submit page, not the complete EXIF; that info is later displayed on the photo-view page after voting closes, if people fill it out.

My reference was in regard to the implication that not having that info completely available somehow detracted from DPC as a learning resource.

I do find this kind of information of interest: whether it helps me to be a "better photographer" who knows? Sometimes it is automatically lifted from my file, sometimes I have to put it in manually, if I remember/want to, and that can be kind of a nuisance. I do not doubt a willingness to share, as Wendy suggests, but asking is also a bit of a nuisance if you are humming along on a fact finding mission.

I've only looked once or twice -- but I actually did look a couple of days ago and was excited that someone had entered it.

One of my biggest issues is that I pick a lot of photos to edit, and then it's difficult to go back and find the exif info for that particular one. I've looked before, but haven't found it. Shouldn't there be a way of seeing the exif info when you're in photoshop editing the image?

Back when our entries were more limited in size, I would occasionally save my photos without the Exif to get a few more precious Kilobytes of file size. Hasn't been an issue for me in years now and I default to saving with Exif info.

Often I wish to know more about the entry, but am disappointed after the challenge when there are no notes on the image describing the scene.

I tried to do Save a Copy in photoshop so that it's saved with the exif. But if the file size is greater than 700k, I have to use the export option, which doesn't save the exif. If there's another way, I'd be happy to do it. But I don't know of any. Maybe we need to up the file size to 1mb :)

I use Save-As-Copy in (an old version of) Photoshop, and use some combination of these to keep the file size under the limit:
- Make the image dimensions slightly smaller than maximum (re-sizing my originals to an even 40% yields 1126 pixels)
- Use noise-reduction: those tiny specks are "detail" to the JPEG algorithm
- Use slightly less-aggressive sharpening (again, less "detail" to compress)
- Lower the JPEG "quality" setting to fit under the size limit

Finally, PS may not be saving the actual EXIF data, but rather "File Info..." (Title, location, keywords, copyright notice, etc.) entered in PS; in the Save-As dialog there should be an option to "Omit non-image data" which strips this info and saves 16-20kb. You may also have a "Save-For-Web" option which lets you set the target file size and automatically adjusts the quality setting to fit; AFAIK this option omits the File Info ...

'Save for web' offers the option to retain the file info. However there are certain items of equipment that DPC doesn't recognise from this info and have to be entered manually.

Hmmm -- didn't realize there was an option -- I'll have to go look for it. Thanks!
