I have a decent entry for Coffee.

I took it with my cellphone.

But, as usual, the file type is not accepted.

If I want to enter, I have to go to the “enter this challenge” place and take the photo “live”.

No editing. No re-dos.

And…. I don’t have an original.

Dang.

This makes me “out” for a long while.

Carry on, good folks!

I'm guessing you have an iPhone and it was trying to submit an HEIF file? Don't you bring your camera and laptop on vacation?

iPhone or Android?

On my S22U (Android) Snapeseed editing app the files are saved as JPEG. I find the file, delete the "e" in the extension and file can be uploaded. Or what Yo_Spiff says on the iPhone.

Yes. And… no. I rarely take any photos even with my cellphone when I’m gone.

I tried to edit it on a laptop, but couldn’t get that to work either.

Oh well…. At least I’m on vacation!! :)

Thanks!

Thanks, Tibi!
Yeah. iPhone. Sigh.

Lydia,
This may be helpful for the future. Lot of good info, including how to open/edit HEIF/HEIC files using Ps, about halfway down the page.

I did a little experimenting with this issue (using Windows 11):
- I downloaded an HEIC test file, verified I could not open it
- When I attempted to open it with Photos, I was asked whether I wanted to install the extension, went through the process.
- After installing the extension, I re-started Photos and successfully opened the file
- I then verified that Photoshop was also able to open the file

The above process should work on Windows 11 and Windows 10 operating systems, and should enable editing with any installed applications (it's not specific to Photoshop, or MS Photos)

You could also change your iPhone to default to saving JPG. I have an iPhone from work and it saves as JPG. Never even seen an HEIC from my phone. If someone sends me one, I convert it to a JPG for compatibility.

When it comes to both compression and image quality, HEIC files win out over JPEG. The HEIC format can actually enhance the quality of photos with transparency and a broader dynamic range capabilities

For this reason, one should think twice about converting HEICs to JPEGs wholesale. The HEIC compression scheme is more efficient, so it results in higher quality even with somewhat smaller file sizes.
Apple phones can write DNG natively, so recording RAW to DNG is probably the best bet, but I have my Android phone set to save both JPEG and DNG. If you are shooting for Minimal Editing, recording both RAW and JPEG is the way to go.

Thanks bunches, guys!

How do I set my iPhone to .jpg default, please?

Before I upgraded my phone (years ago) it used to only be .jpg.

Settings -> Camera ->Formats will bring you to this screen where you can change it

Oddly, my iPhone 10 was defaulted to High Efficiency, but has been saving JPG. Weird.

You are such a spiffy HERO, Spiffy!

Thanks bunches! I should have asked years ago!

Lydia,
I don't know if it is possible to set your iPhone to record both DNG and JPEG, but if you can do so, I would highly recommend it. It is how I leave my Android 'phone set all the time. If I don't need the RAW or the JPEG for a particular purpose, fine, I can always delete them later.
If you can't do this, then you absolutely should shoot RAW unless you know you want or need JPEG, e.g. shooting for a Minimal challenge or don't care about quality.

This is what I had it set on and it always gave me HEIF.

SO, after you told me to change it, I did… to most compatible.

That also gives me a file extension error.

Arg! I really want to have an entry for Bear.

Thank you both for trying, Kirbic and Spiffy. :(

I can still take a shot from the upload an entry screen, but that doesn’t save it in my phone and I don’t have an original to submit… not that they’ve ever asked. Ha!

I’ll do that and pray it doesn’t do well. Lol!

Bear is Standard Editing, so just use the HEIF (or DNG) as your "digital negative" and convert it to JPEG. You should be able to natively edit your iPhone Pro RAW files which will be in DNG format with either Ps or Lr and export a JPEG for submission. If you have an HEIF as an original, you will need to add an extension to handle them. This page gives guidance on how to deal with HEIC on Windows and Mac OS.
