Hey everyone!

I wonder if anyone would be interested in a little idea I had whilst I was filling out some 2023 goals on my profile.

I've often played 'Bingo' for fun with say, Christmas Hallmark movies to tick off the various clichés we expect to see in the movie (accidentally touching hands whilst putting lights on the tree, someone bakes cookies, kiss interrupted at last second! etc..) and this kind of format could translate nicely to a little DPC side challenge which could run for the year of 2023 to add a little interest and encourage a bit of variety in what we photograph.

The idea could be we collectively come up with some bingo cards featuring say, a 4x3 grid. They would all be identical but with the positions randomised.

Each grid could contain say, a photography genre. The goal is to submit a photograph this year from each of the genres to complete your personal bingo card before anyone else does. There would also be kudos for getting the first 'line' but mostly focused on getting a full house :)

So it might look like this...

Landscape - Portrait - Wildlife - Candid
Architecture - Still Life - Woodland - Sports
Food - Product - Black and White - Abstract

We would then aim to complete regular DPC challenges as normal but with an eye on our bingo cards to encourage us to try a new style once in a while to try and tick off all the genres before the year is out, pushing us even more out of our comfort zones than normal (instead of trying to always shoehorn our favourite style into each challenge like I have been doing recently haha)

What do you think?

Perhaps to avoid people who enter a lot of contests simply dominating by submitting a variety over a short period, we could make it so boxes are only ticked off if the image finishes in the top 10 or something, but to be honest it's probably valuable just as an extra motivator to think outside the box when shooting.

Let me know your thoughts! Happy to provide the randomised bingo cards, and also it would be great to have some extra genre suggestions to perhaps make them all quite different. We could even have our bingo cards in our profiles and tick them off as we go.

Alternatively to simplify things we could come up with a list of say, 12 genres we aim to shoot and Top Ten with throughout the year and we can simply follow it up individually on our profiles and within the thread. Every time we get a top ten with a new genre, we can cross it off our list and mark the challenge in which it was met on our profile and here in a post.

It sounds like fun and I could use some extra motivation, I’ve not been very active on this site lately…

Great! Let's see...

These are the genres I randomly picked for my profile. I tried to be quite general, but to reach 12-16 genres it might mean splitting some into two.

- Enter a nature photo in a challenge
- Enter a wildlife photo in a challenge
- Enter an architecture photo in a challenge
- Enter a candid photo in a challenge
- Enter an animal photo in a challenge
- Enter a portrait photo in a challenge
- Enter a macro photo in a challenge
- Enter a still life photo in a challenge
- Enter a landscape photo in a challenge
- Enter a woodland photo in a challenge
- Enter a sports photo in a challenge
- Enter a 'product shot' style photo in a challenge
- Enter a black and white photo in a challenge
- Enter an abstract photo in a challenge

As it's meant to be motivating, we can leave it up to the individual to decide whether their goal should be simply to enter/try each new genre or to say, top-ten with each genre (or in the case of our ribbon-hogs, ribbon in each genre :D)

If you're doing bingo, it needs to be square, otherwise your straight line Bingos can only go up/down OR left/right since they'd be uneven.

Of course! I am quickly discovering the limits of formatting on DPC :’)

I like the bingo idea but to display it on a profile as an image would be too small, so perhaps it can start as a simple goal list for people to use. In this way it could be less Bingo and more of a genre scavenger hunt kind of thing. Those who complete the entire list in 2023 can get a profile bling ribbon.

Just throwing ideas out really - there could be a handful of awards. First to finish the list (overall winner), everyone who completes it in 2023, another colour for those who Top Ten in every genre in 2023 etc.

Sounds like fun.

I don't know if or where, but maybe there is some type of (free) filter available that allows you to make a Bingo board and then you add the pics as and when you have them.

It would be easy to make on PS, and I would make it for you all, but people would have to have PS or other editing programs to paste their image in.

Don't give up -- the image on the profile could be a link. This is doable. :)

there are more we can add:

Street photography
Food photography
Pet photography
Astrophotography (can be an optional one)
Drone photography (can be an optional one)
Sports
fashion
Blur
Insect
flower
composite
long exposure

If I may make a suggestion -- One person can be the card maker -- They would randomly generate the bingo card and give it to anyone that asks. (I'd be happy to do that, if you want) Should be easy with a random number generator. I have a smugmug account, so I could even save people's cards there. They can download them from there. I can leave the cards up on the site so they can just link to the larger image.

How I envision it is to have a 5x5 bingo card, everyone having their own randomized card.
People could mark it off however they want -- they can just print it out and make an x through it. Or if they wanted, could add the actual photo to the card after the challenge is over ( Kasaba's great suggestion!)

There's a good bingo card generator. Again - someone could be the gate keeper so that each card is different. Although, that's probably not necessary, but does make it more interesting.

Just some thoughts!

Are you planning for people to "shoot for bingo" or to fit in challenge entries only?

If you use the "pre /pre" tags (put inside square brackets) you can format text, something like this:

Topic 1A Topic 2A Topic 3A

Topic 1B Topic 2B Topic 3B
and so on ...

If you set up a forum "template post" like this people could substitute thumbnail links to the photos for the challenge topic text.

That could work nicely! Graphics would be great and I'd be happy to do them, but it would be more difficult for everyone to update their own when they tick them off.

And yes, I reckon this would be for challenges. I often see challenges and think 'oh it would be good to do X kind of photo but I wouldn't know where to start with X...' when really I should just give it a go. Hopefully this could push us to shake things up a bit with our photography styles.

Ack -- that would be painful to create unless you have everyone's the same, which wouldn't be quite as fun. It would be easier to update. Although, would it? Now that I'm thinking about it, wouldn't the size of the image (portrait vs landscape vs square) throw off the columns (since we can't set tabs on here)

Off to try it now

This is actually pretty clever - we could have a placeholder image with the topic in for each of the other windows and then we can just change the image code when we complete a square.

I'm not sure that I understand the "pre" tags. DPC gets rid of the extra spaces. Hmm, but obvious the general was able to do it.

Maybe people could have their choice of a graphic or the pre/pre option?

It seems like giving people a card - and each one can be a different random card

Most people could go and update it simply by dropping in a shot quick in photoshop.

You wouldn't have to keep adding things to your workshop - you can just update the photo.

People could chose which way is easier for them?

I wouldn't bother with a placeholder image - just the text. If you have an image it will look like it's been filled in. Easier to see and more impressive as it grows with just the text until you've shot for it.

The coding bit was pretty sharp on your part! If we set up a template, users could copy/paste and have it on their profile or the forum thread.

The card is nice too, but we're limited to the thumbnail size I believe in posting it? So we'd need to visit the link to really see it.

The coded way you came up with there is pretty neat I think.

Sorry I wasn't clear - I meant a placeholder image with the topic title, white background in the same size format as the thumbnail. It would then recreate the same look as a direct image. Let me see if I can whip something up.

So this looks great but there is a potential issue - if you shoot in portrait it'll look a bit messy, so back to bingo cards I guess!

Whip something up and I'll see if I can break it. ;P
