Bear with me on this one. I know this site is called DIGITAL photography challenge, but despite about 5 billion people in the world having a digital camera or phone, only 20-30 enter a challenge.

There's a growing enthusiasm for people to get back to 'slow photography', taking a couple of considered shots rather than filling up a memory card with thousands of images then choosing the best one. Film has a quality all of its own and obviously different to 60MP auto-everything digital images. That quality is appealing but difficult to achieve.

So, what about allowing scanned film photos? Images taken with a film camera, processed in actual chemicals in an actual darkroom, then scanned and entered into the completion. Remember REAL grain and how we tried to control it! Remember push processing! Remember manual focus, or 3 focus points and a dark age AF system? Film photographers have a massive disadvantage compared to digital.

Photos can be validated by an accompanying digital photo of the same scene with EXIF data.

Edited to add: yes I have, mostly white wine but some spirits too.

Sounds like a great side challenge! I agree that film is making a small resurgence.

I picked up a nice rangefinder several months ago to play with. :-)

Why a side challenge? The decline of DPC indicates the current model isn't working.

It's a fine idea, just very limiting for participating (very low number of entries anticipated) - AND - the exif / original component is a tough fit for our current model.

I also think as a side challenge it could have a long shelf life that would add a nice twist.

For starters, you're offering up someone, or more, to set this all up, integrate it, or combine it, set parameters for the NON-digital aspect of it.

What about conversion, the right/legal technique, exactly which ruleset of the many that we have that wouldn't apply to this on any level should be used........

The side challenge setup works like this: All that crap I mentioned?

When you get it all sorted out and workable, announce this fabulous new gig you got going as a side challenge for us to experience.

Keep us posted!

BTW, having been here consistently for a few weeks, one can ascertain that DP Challenge is a place for people who seriously want to work at it while still having fun and sharing ideas and experience.

The "model" is pretty much the same and works well for those who want what DPC has to offer.

It's never been easy, but in these days of instant positivity and gratuitous, effusive praise over the most mundane things, it's still good to "work" here to keep one current and sharp.

This is crazy, some people don't like new ideas :(

It's not a NEW idea, Margaret. Deviant Art has been wide open for over a decade and I used to play there once. But it is not what DPC *is*... It makes no sense for us to be all things to everyone.

Deviant Art is a horrible website, worse than Facebook. I would never have any participation there.

The OP asked about images from analog film, not Deviant Art. My suggestion was to let people like Mike and myself participate once a month at DPC the way we would like to. What's wrong with that? It would be just one challenge per month and if the participation would not take off, it would be shut down.

I don't understand why DPC has to follow such a rigid formula, maybe some experimentation would make it more interesting?

That's partly what side challenges are for ... to try out or show off things not covered by the regular challenges.

Nobody is saying don't post scanned pictures, just that it doesn't make sense to try and integrate all the extra rules and stuff to support an occasional challenge which is likely to have even fewer participants than the current ones. The only thing side challenges don't do is assign numerical scores and award ribbons ...

I was thinking of incorporating film into a normal challenge. So, using the 'Coffee' challenge as an example, DigitalJoe takes a photo of a coffee cup using his snazzy Canon OmniAuto 5000, with EXIF data and uploads it to the site. FilmPhile takes a film photo of some coffee beans with her Olympus Blur-o-Matic, and processes it into a negative using retro chemicals. This negative is then digitally scanned and uploaded to the site. If FilmPhile's picture scores well and requires validation, FilmPhile uploads a digital image of the scene that was photographed, with EXIF data to prove the date, and the original of the scanned negative.

All this reminds me of the guy who entered a cat in a dog swimming race. (True.)

Which begs the question why the race was limited to dogs only. Do cats normally win animal swimming races by having an unfair advantage over dogs?

DPC started when digital photography was new, low quality images from expensive kit. Film photography is 100 times harder compared to modern digital instant photography. Your comparison works if the cat was in a sack with a brick.

I don't think I even have any working film cameras anymore. Never did have a darkroom. I really wouldn't want to spend money on film and on processing, especially since I have no control over their processing. I'm curious how many people would even have access to the things needed for this type of challenge?

The cat wasn't in a sack with or without a brick. The cat loves swimming. However it disrupted the race by distracting the dogs.

It never ceases to amaze me how these convos devolve into people making snarky remarks about, and to, DPC when their idea for something that requires effort and organization to enact is turned down.

It should be a mantra and understood:

You have some "Great Idea" for something new that's going to require effort, structure, time, and someone to pull it all together, then do it as a side challenge and stop expecting DPC to bear all the effort.

Maybe start by taking a poll in the forums and see how many people will participate.

ACTUAL participation, not just be willing to view the results.

See who's willing to go back to the expense and aggravation of dealing with film.

Yeah, there's something of a resurgence with film, like there's a resurgence with vinyl records as well, but the sense behind that escapes me, too.
