I thought I would never get a Blue Ribbon. Too many great photographers on DPC. I'm blown away to get 2 on the same day after 369 submissions. Bucket list day! Thank You All!

Looking back at your profile and all the participation and work you've put in over the years, if your case isn't testament to how DPC can help someone improve and reach the top if they put the work in and strive to get out and shoot I don't know what is!

many congratulations Michael on the blue for two awesome photos ..
I love them both .. :)

interested in the settings on your action shot .. "Take-Off, Spot-Breasted Oriole"

Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 5000
Shutter: 1/3200 sec

I get terrible noise at just 400- 500 iso .. shooting with Olympus OM-D E-M1 mk3 ..

did you do a lot of noise reduction .. and if so what program(s) .. :)

Roz,
The R5 can handle noise much better than my older camera's. It was helpful that the bird was bright so it didn't have much noise. I was sitting in the house and heard the bird. They are very loud. Grabbed the camera and just caught it flying off. Really no time to think about settings. Even focus was off on closer shots, but the bird was kind enough to fly through my focus plane as he left the yard.
I recently purchased Topaz AI, and I have to say that it really is giving a nice look to my photos. Handles the background noise really well and usually doesn't blur out the subject too much. Topaz AI may be the difference in my pictures. I also used a little Neural background blur in Photoshop. It's a little tricky to use, but I think I'm figuring it out. Have to be careful not to blur your subject with that.
BTW, I really loved your submission in the Action challenge. I thought for sure it would win (would be my luck). Definitely a piece of art.

You seem to be settling into your zone, and it's lovely. May it grow deep and wide.

Bravo. Beautiful images, and proof that persistence works!

Way to go!!! Beautifully done and well deserved! HUGE congrats!

Congrats on 2 fantastic images! I like Wendy's suggestion on the bee/flower; also love the overall framing composition of the oriole. And thank you for sparing us the recitation of the score going up and down all week. Oh just kidding folks, that is one of the most endearing bits of weirdness at DPC - kinda the equivalent of pixel peeping!

thanks heaps for the info ..
and what a miracle it was for you to get that shot .. considering you didnt have time to set your camera up ..
everything just worked and came together ..

i have topaz AI but havent really got adept at using it .. i usually use the RAW program to get rid of noise .. but i will check out topaz AI again ..

talking about blur .. interestingly enough . i took photos using my phone on portrait mode where it blurs out the background using AI ..
i also saved a copy of the same photo without the blur .
i put the unblurred image into photoshop and did a neural depth blur on it ..
and crazy . but the phone did a much better job .. photoshop missed some bits but the phone didnt ..
i have a samsung galaxy S21 ultra 5g btw ..

anyway . thanks again .. have a great week .. :)

I haven't used Topaz much yet, but it's amazing. I got the suite of AI, DeNoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel on a Black Friday special.

This was a challenge entry in November (using DeNoise and Sharpen)

This was the same photo without any sharpening or noise reduction

Camera was my Sony RX100 VII, which only has a 1 inch sensor, so it's very noisy in low light.
