Due to ongoing (and frustrating) customer service issues with our current hosting provider, we will be migrating DPC to a new provider in the early hours of November 26th, beginning at 1 AM EST.

The data migration should take a few hours, and during that time period the site will be shut down and unavailable to users.

Thanks for your understanding as we make this move.

Cool!

I'd just like to state for the record my endless appreciation to all the powers that be over the years for a terrific DPC experience.

It's been a valuable and enjoyable aspect of my life.

Thank you!

On behalf of all "the powers that be", let me be the first to say "You're welcome, sir!"

Membership expired yesterday.
I'll re-up on the 27th to test it out.

I don't know... just think of how many hours wasted hitting the update button.

How many cans of spam purchased for challenges (1, that I recall -- but oh that smell!)

How many times I got my kids on the edge of hypothermia (2, they claim. But seriously, the James River is NOT that cold in November! And astro photography in the mountains is SUPPOSED to be cold!)

(it took two for this - my daughter and then my son was the eel)

Plus, quality time spent with my husband?

priceless!

speaking as an IT person with not much expertise but years of experience.....

make sure you have your own copy of your portfolio, people.

you just never know.

ack!! That is a really really good question -- how do we download it?

I don't know of a way to download the pictures besides just opening each and every one and right clicking on it.

I wrote a script in python a few years ago to download a copy of my challenge entries ... ended up having my ip address blocked for alledged nefarious activity. :-)

In the end Langdon zipped them all up for me and sent me a file.

Would be a nice member perk to do that for all of us, eh? I could use an update with the latest. :-D

Um.... Stupid user question.

Nobody said it out loud, but......

Are we going to lose the site history?

I'm not concerned about my stuff, but I like gazing through old challenges, my personal faves, et al.....

No history will be lost. The site will be the same as it is today, just on another host.

Also, we are not dropping the current host until the new one is operational, so we do have a backup.

BTW, the site content as it was last week was already copied over to the new hosting service successfully. We will make it current this weekend.

Yes, thanks, how long did it take you? i have about 1300 images ;)

PS At some stage I just printed to PDF the portfolio with small images, that did not take much time :) I still use DPC as an index for my photos.

At least with some older (full) versions of Acrobat (not just the Reader app) you could download (rather than print) web pages to a PDF, with a choice of up to full resolution for the images, embedding links, etc.

A related problem is retrieving any print images at DPCPrints -- harder since the files are (should be!) a lot bigger.

However, hopefully everyone has some backups other than DPC!

But for the great memories I wouldn't really be stressed if I lost my pics from here, I have them all in a file box in the cellar somewhere .... :)

"Hi" by the way :)

I anticipated it would be necessary to backup my DPC record at some point. I wanted the data on each submitted entry so I pulled up each individual photo and voting statistics. I then took a screenshot and downloaded it as a document. I have been using photoshop to crop and resize each individual picture, my remarks and data and saving to a file. I am also in the process of uploading each picture into Blurb and making a photo book of all my favorite entries. Quite a task but fun and I will have a hard copy record to pass down to the kids!

Just to be clear. If I lose my history, it's because you lose it. So . . . if I re-enter a previously entered photo in an archival challenge because I can't remember and can't check/verify . . . neither can you (check/verify). Right?
