How you can have a photo sitting over seven for most of the week, and then the last two days, boom crash!
11/01/2022 07:55:35 PM · #2
Well, in my experience that "crash" occurs whether you're sitting just over seven, just over six, just over five ...

I agree it's discouraging. :-(

It just doesn’t add up to me sometimes, but it is what it is. That’s my favourite saying at the moment!

I just go into a challenge expecting it to drop. My FS started off great but in the 5's now. I really didn't expect it would be one with broad appeal however.

If you're "over 7", every vote of 7 or fewer shirts your score. Just sayin'...

Well ... obviously plenty of 7+ scores were dealt earlier in the week. Why shouldn't that trend continue?

I agree with Steve. Just anticipate a drop, especially in the last day or two. If the water levels drop across the pond, then all will be maintained I guess, position-wise.

I experienced a drop from 7.5 to 7.1 with the last five votes I received in the free study ..

it seems very odd that this seems to be the new normal .. and its expected that our entries will take a really big dive in those last few hours ..

I have been a member here for years and this was never normal .. granted there are fewer ppl entering and voting .. but i don't remember this happening a year ago when the numbers were probably not much different ..

so what has changed I wonder ..

Roz, I can only come to one conclusion, last day voters typically vote quite low, not always but I would say 90% of the time.

There are so many bad feelings about this problem that maybe it is time to do something about it? There are two people who thought that Roz's image was worth a score of 4 (!) and two who gave it 5 hence for them the image was below average. I am sure it is possible to identify these people and ask them to tell us why they thought Roz's image was so poor? I would love to see some of them suspended as they spoil the DPC fun for many.

I have to say also that with such small number of votes the current voting system on 1 to 10 scale makes less and less sense to me as it can be too easily abused. And I am tired of the lack of effort to change this.

Unfortunately that won't happen. I would at LEAST like a system to be put in place if someone was to vote 1-3 that their vote was know by the photographer and a comment given as to why the photo deserved a low mark, but I think we've mentioned this before, so we are just flogging a dead horse!!

I nothing is done it will get worse as the number of participants and voters continues to fall.

My motivation to participate has hit a new low :(

I don't get why people only vote using the values of only 5 and 6. There is an entire range to use between 1 and 10.

My suggestion was deleted, long live status quo!

If you mean your suggestion to suspend me because I voted 4 and didn't write a comment, it's still there.

No, I created another thread for "Everything goes" once a month fun challenge on Member's forum, it was deleted by glad2badad, I don't know even why as I could not read his message.

PS So why did you give Roz's image a vote of 4? Don't like bugs? Seen too many of them? I am curious.

The thread was hidden as it was a rehash of a well bantered subject from a few months ago. Regarding this subject.

My apologies ... meant to send you a PM as a follow-up. Got busy with work and forgot.

Maybe it is time to revisit? Why decide for the whole community without giving it a chance to express an opinion? Having more fun at DPC could be of interest after all!

Only 17 entries in the latest Open challenge in voting!

Actually I would like the SC to review hiding of this thread as it was NOT THE SAME as the old thread. I did not talk about virtual photography in 3D at all! Just about freedom of being creative while allowing for departure from some of the current rules. Just have some change and fun.

Already did. :-)

Summation: "... No date requirement, no originals needed, no rules, just create the best composition you can from anything you want to use."

Again - discussed here.

I believe we've distracted from THIS thread now well enough. Let's refrain from derailing it any farther. Thanks.

My last one went from a 6.2-ish to 6 ... about par for the course. Dropping a 7 hurts though.

For those who don't know what my post relates to - glad2badad keeps on removing my posts. Vive la démocratie! (my written French needs more work :)

Margaret, Barry is just trying to keep this thread on-topic. Your idea doesn't really fit well with the normal original review process, however you should definitely feel free to run this as a side challenge if you feel so inclined. That would allow for the alternative "originality" assessment.

My approach to this challenge was to give a 5 if the photo "works," if it is "complete." The appeal of this photo is its flashiness. It's bright green, the head and knees are razor sharp while everything else is fuzzy. So a bright, centered subject and .... nothing else. So, 4 for the impressive quality and skill, but if you want a 5 from me the photo has to have an overall reason to exist for its own sake, not just to be impressive in one aspect.
