Ok -- for only the 2nd time in 18 years, I have a corrupted card. When I try to view it on the computer or on the camera, it tells me I need to format it to use it.

I've been searching online -- and things say they're free, but it's only free to download their software, not to actually use it. One of the softwares has actually found the files, but wants $60 to recover them. And that's not to buy the program -- that's to use it for a month. I wouldn't even mind buying a program, even though I never need it, but I don't need a monthly or yearly subscription, and the program itself is $150. :(

These are photos from work that I really need. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What brand is the card?

Have you looked at this one?

It is not free but is reasonably priced and claims unlimited recovery within the subscription period. I've used their software in the past, but not recently. While free is good, good is not usually free.

That's the one that has actually found the files, but it's $70 for a year. Considering this is only the 2nd corrupted card I've had since going digital, it means $70 to just get these files back. :(

Yep, that is what it means. Actually sounds like a relatively reasonable cost. The alternative is re-creating the work, if that is even possible.

Well -- other "free" ones weren't able to recover anything, so I went with the one that worked. luckily, the did have a coupon code, so I was able to get it down to $41 for the one month subscription. It has recovered half of the photos I need. And it looks like the other half will be ok.

Cross your fingers that the card works after I format it because it's my $400 card. But I'm pretty confident it was just the software that got messed up

thanks!

I would be very concerned with the reliability of that card, and be careful with it going forward.

Yeah -- I'm a bit worried, too, but I can't really replace it -- too expensive.

It's actually the Sony one, too, not the off-brand that recently came out.

How old is the card? The only time I ever had a corrupted card, the shop replaced it.

Less than a year, but I bought it at Amazon

I would consider contacting Sony and asking if they would consider a warranty replacement. If they do so, you have a new card in which you would have more confidence. If I were in your shoes, that is probably what I would do. At very least, once I had all the recoverable files off the card, I would conduct testing to determine if there are bad areas on the card.

I use EaseUS at work all the time - a very good bit of software - recovers files where others can't.

Hi Wendy! Sorry I’m late to the thread but maybe this can still help you or someone else.
I recently had my first corrupted card in 15 years. I tried the packaged (sandisk) and other free software but had no luck. Only one application, “EaseUs” had a suite that looked like it was going to work (gave me previews) but ended up hitting a pay wall.
I searched old threads and actually Kirbic had a solution a while back!

He recommended ZAR which worked perfectly for me!
Here is the old thread with link to ZAR:

I hope this helps!
I had been off DPC for a long time so it was cool to still find awesome help here. Thanks, Kirbic!

ETA: LOL I guess it has been a while! My gear list shows my 30D still :)

I used a free download called Recuva which recovered deleted files. Windows PC, not sure if it supports other software.

That old thread was mine. ZAR got my photos back okay, BUT the EXIF was totally messed up so they couldn't be used for challenges.
