Motti - It might help if you entered open entry challenges too? Would at least increase participation by one.

DPC is a "challenge" site by design. The Archival challenges have been an artifact of Covid 19 isolation; before that, they were few and far between. We are scaling back the number of Archival challenges to 2 a month, one of them for paying members and the other for all members. We encourage you to participate in the actual "challenge" challenges, as they are the core of what DPC is about. And if you want to participate in both Archival challenges each month, we encourage you to become a paid-up member of DPC.

We DO appreciate and enjoy our registered members, but DPC can't survive without a core of paying members. $25.00 a year (just over $2.00 a month) seems to us an extremely reasonable ask of our membership: we've been online for 20 years, and the number hasn't changed in all that time. Considering that inflation has taken huge chunks of value out of all currencies in the last two decades, the $25 is even more of a bargain than it used to be :-) It's basically one cheap breakfast pastry a month...

Shouldn't we have at least taken a vote on this? Life is not back to normal and at least that gave me a chance to post something.

Every challenge currently open for submission (perhaps except sunrise/sunset -- depends on your location/view) can be fulfilled without leaving one's abode.

I am not keen on archival challenges simply because I am a last minute person, or at least less inclined to look in my archives than I am to rustle up a new meal. But if it gets more peeps to the table that is a good.

What would also be good is more peeps COMMENTING. Do people realize how beneficial it is to the commenter to articulate for her/his/their self some kind of reaction, any kind of reaction?

That was opne of my strongest learning experiences my first few years on DPC. Forcing myself to comment on my midrange votes helped me learn. The ones that aren't bad, but don't wow me either. It's easy to praise the ones you love or easily identify the problems with the poor entries, but those fives that usually take 3 seconds of time are the strongest lesson for the commenter.

Some of us have become gun shy because of poor reactions to fair criticism. Got to have a thick skin around here.

going off to comment on what I find ‘average’ with my mid range votes . . . Hurt feelings be damned, because I am just one view and I don’t walk in to a museum liking everything but there it still sits - in a museum while I am just an average joe with my opinion. ETA: I want to comment because it is easy to just score an average score and not say what you like or what, in your opinion, would have garnered a higher score (at least from me, which is just one itty bitty person)

caveat: I try to comment on what I SEE, and how it works. I almost always have no clue as to how to make something better.

Yes, I suppose they can, though I have a hard time building up excitement to do that. If you look through my portfolio you might notice that, historically, my preference for shooting venue is not my home, nor is it indoors. Also, my home has changed location due to Covid, my environment is different and my desire to go out and explore is limited to what’s safe and available. Exploring my archives is, in contrast, always safe and available, relives memories, and has been a welcome alternative that I hate to have end.

I do like to comment when I’m moved to do so and appreciate when my image prompts others to do the same.
Thank you.

Nor is that what you should be commenting on -- as you say, you can only comment on what you like/don't like, though that can have the same effect without implying that the photographer is "wrong" ... for example, compare the two following:

"Your shadows are all blocked up."

"Personally, I like to keep more detail in the shadow areas, even when going for a high-contrast look."

The answers to which would likely be, respectively:

"Yeah, so, I did that on purpose you idiot" and

"Thanks for the feedback."

I understand -- my own "studio" resources are pretty limited too. But also remember the original motivation for making this site was to "challenge" each other to get out of their "comfort zone" and learn to shoot new things.

Also remember you can start a side-challenge in the Forums with pretty much any topic and rules you want -- it won't be part of the DPC scoring system but you will often get more feedback on your pictures than they would get in a regular challenge.

That is kind of my feeling on the subject.

Tell me what you like/didn't like about my image.

The very thing you might think needs "fixed" may have been intentional.

I want to know if it moved you or is it 'Meh!".

I would be greatly surprised if this isn't the general consensus on Archival Challenges.

I love to revisit where I've been and where I've gone both physically and mentally by wandering through my archives.

I have pulled images through my searches that have found their way to the walls of our gallery.

I also love it. I have found 'stuff' that I had no idea about how to edit when I took the picture, or I deemed it just meh. I have scored some pretty high scores with my old 'meh' shots and sold a couple too.

I get what you are saying when you say this is a challenge site get out and do it,,, but this is as well I feel, as we have learnt so much inbetween, anyways, I love it and have really enjoyed looking through my old files =)

Please remember we are still doing archival challenges, just not every week.

My participation increased when there were archival challenges. Now they have largely disappeared, I don't even bother to check what the topic is.

Just off the top of my head, and out of curiosity, if we brought back weekly archival challenges and made them for PAID MEMBERS only, would that increase the number of financial supporters of DPC? In other words, would registered users be more inclined to support us if they could play the archival game?

343 challenges entered in 16 years. Healthy participation for sure, but it looks like you've never been a big fan of the themed challenges (in general) and have leaned towards Free Studys more frequently. I do see where you've entered more themed challenges recently when they've been Archival. IMO, Archival is not DPChallenge. Yes, it's fun to visit your backlog of photos, but it's also way easier than having to actually "challenge" yourself to go out and find/create an entry in a two week period (I kind of with it was still a ONE week window).

"... hate to have end" What? Why would the enjoyment of visiting your photo archives have to end just because you can't pick one for a challenge entry?

Aren't we photographers at heart? Isn't there fun, enjoyment, reminiscing, to be had by looking thru prior photos just because you can or want to? This is an activity that shouldn't be impacted by DPChallenge.

I've taken up a project these past few months to organize, tag/keyword, our family photos for the last 20 years or so. This has been a lot of work, but a ton of enjoyment. And like Jeb has done, numerous photos have been pulled for prints and now hang in my office, around the house, and some shared with relatives as gifts. My end goal is to put together some (many) traditional type physical photo albums to share with my family.

Archives are fun for sure, but they're not the core of DPChallenge.

Try it and see. I think it would a good opportunity.
