MY personal observation on this long talked subject; please comment:

1. early voters mark high
a. they don't have a horse in the race
b. they appreciate a good image or the response to the topic
2. next day voters who have an image in the challenge
a. mark low out of fury for having lower marks
b. mark low out of habit
3. closer to the end of the voting time people get confused and
a. make some comments but make sure to say that they did not vote
b. get a bit confused by looking again and bumping up
4. "familiarity brings contempt": no high votes because
a. some voters pretty much guessed the photographer and marks can go up or down depending on personal relationship
b. some images were already seen on other sites - FB or Instagram
and so on....
can we get beyond our petty egos?

At this point? Nah, doubt it. :-)

I don't think it's that bad.

I simply ask myself two questions:
1 - Does it make my eyes bleed?
2 - Does it make me want to scoop them out if they didn't bleed initially?

If both are answered in the negative, probably will garner an above-average vote.

The fact you can recognize such patterns most likely means that people are voting consistently, which is the main thing we ask of voters.

Nah. It seems like there is so few of us left, that we are the DieHards that can get past everything else and vote what we think is worthy.

Though I must admit, it does make me wonder when I receive ones on photos that are pretty obvious that they're most likely mine, it does make me wonder if it's something personal. But only if I look and there are hardly any other ones given to anybody else.

I know that I do vote higher when I vote early. But it really has nothing to do with my score. It's more that I usually wait until last minute to enter. And then I'm really excited to see what people have done. So I enjoy their creativity and different takes on the subject so much more. By the end of the week The challenge has lost some of its immediacy. I believe when I vote right away on a challenge that I'm looking a little bit more at subject and creativity, and by the end of the week more about execution simply because the topic hasn't been so much on my mind anymore. So it takes more to wow me at the end of the week.

I never take away points, and I rarely bump anything up, simply because I don't go through voting multiple times. I think that stems from voting early, and then going back at the end and wondering why in the world I gave such high votes and not feeling right lowering them. :)

If I change my voting style, I've often wondered if I should go back and bump up my favorites. I don't have a very large standard deviation, most of my votes run from 5-7. But I have a hard time giving a photo a nine or a 10, just because it's my favorite in the challenge, if it's only worth a seven or an eight. That would seem like I was trying to skew the voting so that my favorite would win. But if I like it better than the other sevens, should it have been an eight in the first place? But I always reserved eight nines and tens for the ones that knocked my socks off. And it's a lot harder to do that now.

I don't know that the we're jaded - we are just more experienced and have seen a lot more. If we still got excited at the same old thing, there would be no reason to grow.

Feel free to take exception with any of this, I won't run away and pout. :)

Do you vote higher because you like something or because you think it is "good"?

In the beginning I didn't vote at all, because numbers did not reflect my reactions; I only commented.

But now I have this interior conversation about why I like something, about why I might think something is good and sometimes let them fight it out, numerically.

In the end I believe in the comments.

This, this is what is wrong with it all.

Avg (participants): 6.3158
Avg (non-participants): 7.2500

Mind you, in saying that, I am in a challenge and I have never voted so low, ever, on a challenge and I am not that much of a high scorer to start off with. But this, this is bad. I am thinking of going back in and just bumping everyone 2 points.

Yup -- full point different is a bit much. But I assume that's because the 1 was from a participant.

So, according to my math:

There were
18 participants
15 nonparticipants

So the 1 moved the participant average down close to 0.3.

If the photo was worth a 1, more power to it. If it's someone who has an issue with me, that's a shame, but nothing I can do about it.

I only hope that people are simply voting on the merits of the photo. But it doesn't surprise me at all that participant votes are lower than nonparticipants. Participants have thought through the challenge for two weeks, analyzed it, thought through what fits and what doesn't fit, it makes sense that it would be harder to impress a participant. But it is rather painful seeing the stats.

Yup. and yup. To get the highest numbers I have to like it and I have to think it's good. Or, it has to make such an impression on me that I don't care that it's not good (those are the most fun. The ones that blow your socks of BECAUSE they're flawed.)

It can go either way, but rarely so: for my Light/Dark Avg (participants): 7.1053
Avg (non-participants): 6.4211

I started this topic BECAUSE we are the DieHards and, although not caring for marks, I'd appreciate some comments for the opposites sides. I get comments for the 9 and 10 marks but never for 1.
Some people really get frustrated by the marks and tend to fade in participation.
As for my way of voting, I do not appreciate an image that just meets the challenge and I usually mark it with 4 unless technically qualifies to be a stock image.
I do give 10s

Very good point, that. The commenting on the lower images, in fact it is all about that if you really think about it. When we had 300-400 odd entries in the Freestudy, we got loads of comments, 9/10 with helpful advice.

Comments now are fairly rare, on either end of the spectrum.

I’d been trying to do a post challenge discussion thread. I really wish there would be more participation in that. I would love people’s insights as to what they liked and didn’t like in the challenge. Not just on my entry, but others as well. I think it could be much more useful, plus easier to find. We don’t know when people add comments to other people’s entries, but it’s’ easy to see additions to threads,

What never ceases to amaze me are the comments post challenge. I seem to get a lot of great ones after rollover,(not on all of them, just some) swooning over my image. Why is that? why can’t people comment before hand. I’m not saying this for vanities sake but is it because they don’t want to have a corresponding high vote, I don’t know, just saying… people are strange, I know, I can be…we all have our silly peculiarities.

I often comment after rollover, mostly if I haven't looked or voted in the challenge - a sort of making up for missing a deadline, and it is always interesting to see what, if any these days, other commenters may have written. It's fun to swoon.

I can relate to that :)

I comment more after challenges for the simple reason that it is quicker and doesn’t take up much time. All the pictures are right there and I can go down the list and easily see the ones that draw responses out of me. When I’m voting, I have to study each image and really invest in it to give it a fair vote.

I rarely vote on a challenge I’m participating in. I’m typically a high voter, and if I’ve entered a photo I love and think is worthy of a high score, but it’s getting a low score, I think it’s a rare person who would then give everyone else a high score when the photos they’re voting on don’t measure up to what they think theirs deserves.

Didn’t there used to be a rule that a 1 or 2 score had to have a comment explaining their reason - and identifying themselves?? The voting loses alot of credibility for being legitimate when there’s a 1 score on ribbon winners or images that are obviously good images. If there’s a legitimate reason for giving a 1, okay, but say so and say who you are. I think it would stop because I think most of the 1’s are attempts to manipulate the final results. With so few voters, that’s exactly what happens.

We tried that briefly, but people either made "placeholder" comments or just voted "3" so the experiment was abandoned.

The one thing with commenting is I have done it and put in my 2 cents. Then felt like a right plonker when I am telling the Blue, Reds etc that a boost in contrast, or a crop here and there would make it better. =|

I think comments are better-received (sic) when phrased as "I would prefer ..." rather than "It would be better if ..."

Crap I would hope I have never said it would be better if................

ekkk

Now I am super paranoid

No, it's all right, packed my paranoia back into its suitcase, I phrased it wrongly when I said a crop here and there would make it better. I have not said that, just suggested a crop and where I personally would crop it and, in my opinion, etc.

I love the comments like you make, JulietNN. Even if the commenter doesn’t win, the constructive comments by photographers I respect, who see something I missed really help me. In fact, for a current challenge, I pulled my entry in the last challenge with the same theme, and used the comments to help me do better this time. They were great advice comments that helped me see the shooting and processing in a genre I’m not totally comfortable thru the eyes of people who do it better. I think it helped, but of course, my score was 6.7 one minute, then I saw one more vote and it dropped to barely 6.2, haha! It’s okay tho, I’ve learned it is what it is, and like the General says, it’s a consistent thing, so it’s just one of the obstacles everyone has to deal with. I truly hate whining about my scores.

Just because something wins a blue or red doesn't mean that it can't be made better! I ALWAYS appreciate feedback. I may not agree with it, but it's always worth taking a second look at something. I have improved because I have had people that cared enough to give me feedback. Don't ever stop!
