Not a thread to pick on DPC or the people who may be rewriting the site.

Just a place for constructive thoughts/ideas

I think the site would be much more useable and much more open to discussion if we could simply paste photos into a thread. I had two different thoughts this morning, but it takes too much time to be worth it.

The strength of this site is the ability to discuss and learn. Yet if we just want to post a photo to demonstrate a technique or ask a question, you have to

1. go to your workshop
2. Click upload
3. Select photo
4. scroll down to the bottom of your workshop (I have purchased the extended space)
5. click on the photo
6. select the photo number
7. go back to the thread in which you were commenting,
8. click the insert thumbnail button
9. Paste the photo nunber
10. Click ok.

If I want to discuss a photo in facebook, I click a button, select the photo, and click ok.

I bring up facebook simply because I actually found a really useful knitting group and I'm asking tons of questions and continuously uploading photos to illustrate the difficulties.

If you have a person who has been here for 11 years, and can't be bothered to go through that many steps just to ask a question, why would someone new do it?

(You can also add a couple more steps to the first list of instructions, because it usually tells me I'm out of space. Then I have to scroll down to the bottom again (the photos at the top are old and have been culled many times. I want to keep those), select the photos individually, delete, and try again)

If the website is still being worked on -- perhaps fix the major flaws, and don't worry about updating the look. Make it more usable. Because looks change continously. Usability is the most important thing for finding/retaining people.

You may now return to your regular programming. :)

(There have been 4 questions/comments/posts that I haven't done in the last couple of days, because it's not worth how long it takes to put up examples that you don't want using up space in your portfolio. That's the other issue -- if you go back and look at old posts, many links are broken because people have removed those photos. So the old information is also lost.)

What Wendy said!!

I severely limit my interactions as well because the steps to do it are insane. No way in this day and age new people are going to do that. This new generation is very visual in both communication and learning. Even to start a new thread is a bit of a task when new. I have laughed often to myself how a photography site is so difficult to be visual.

Excellent suggestion, Wendy. I think it can be applied to most of the processes on the site. Even just updating your profile is a saga.

Regarding posting a photo to discuss, that photo has to be "hosted" somewhere to appear on the site. Regardless of what mechanism is used to put it up, either Mita is donating the space to host it or it's in your portfolio/workshop space. The other way to link a photo for discussion, and an easier way at that, is for it to be hosted elsewhere (smugmug, for example, or wherever else you stow images online), in which case you can post a link to it with a single click. I don't know what it would take to be able to paste an image into text like you can with, say, email, (copy a jpg to clipboard and paste into mail) but I'd imagine it adds somewhat to the cost of hosting the site, since it's not a functionality you see a lot online...
