My experience in 15 years on DPC has been that the more generous and/or thoughtful voters tend to show up either early, while the hard to impress crowds usually vote after that.

Plus, high votes later on will affect the average less. So a few high votes early on will then result in a slow drop after the first round.

I always thought, somewhat pessimistically, that early high votes were meant to make people feel better and perhaps impact the state of mind of voters (participants) with votes they cast in the initial stages. Higher score, feeling happy, vote higher. :-)

Who's to say that some of those early votes don't get changed later?
Food for thought.

Early voters are feeling optimistic about their entry and vote higher, later voters more pessimistic after getting some lower votes themselves.

While I've noticed a similar pattern myself, I think it's important to remember that any underlying motivation or rationale is purely speculative on the part of us posters -- we have yet to run a comprehensive (anonymous) survey of people's actual voting patterns.

And I intended no comment at all on any "underlying motivation". I was actually trying to be humorous - ruefully so, but funny :)

How do you know this, unless you’re speaking for yourself :)

It’s kind of sad because everyone works hard on their images. Images start out as a thought that someone makes a reality.

Usually I notice the same thing, but recently it's switched around. Last 4 or so challenges I've started out low and gone up about .6 by the third day of voting.

I am going the opposite way. Usually it is the other way
Started at 4.8 and now at 5.5

Same here… I started at 6, went down to below 5.4 but now back to slightly above 5.8

I've noticed a trend... if it's a "good" entry of mine, the score goes down on the last day or two.

If it's "not that great" of an image, the score goes up the last day or two.

Putting aside for a moment the issue of early voters possibly being different from later voters in a whole variety of ways that affect their votes, what Lydia describes fits in with of the phenomena of "regression to the mean", which occurs even if voters were sequenced randomly. This refers not some "absolute mean", but the unknown mean/average score for that particular image (in this case). That will only start to become reliably reflected by the votes after 30 or so votes. The regression to the mean phenomena is used in clinical trials. One such trial I was involved with only recruited people with high blood pressure to see if the planned treatment would lower blood pressure. But the protocol did not allow people to be enrolled after just one blood pressure reading because if that was an atypically high reading for that person their blood pressure readings would tend to get lower over time without any intervention, leading to a faulty conclusion about the efficacy of the treatment. Additional readings had to be taken several days later before they could be enrolled...

I think it means our Australian/New Zealand and maybe European voters are nice people (high vote). They are first in line to vote (or so I thought) ... :-).

I'm pretty good at getting mediocre votes to start then gradually dropping. The plus side to a mediocre score is it doesn't fall as far or as fast. And (huffs out chest in pride!) I've recently been able to garner a couple of 1s and 2s on entries! Damn proud of that!

My vote given is usually much higher than the vote I am receiving. I don't know if that means anything or not, but for those who are competitive, there may be a tendency to vote in concert with the score being received?

That actually makes sense. I think last day votes are in adjustment mode. We have many voters that vote in a very narrow range (like 4,5,6 or 5,6,7) and if you want to keep your average vote given (which is very important to some) at a certain level it's "safe" to raise a few of your lower votes up a notch without impacting the final outcome too much. Some 4's go to 5's or 5's to 6's.

You’re obviously not concerned about your average vote given ;)

Not much really. I generally cast a full range of votes; usually between 3 to 8, but will use the entire 1 to 10 as needed.

Here's an example of falling off a cliff (vote-wise):
Soft II

Votes: 2
Score: 7.0000
----
Votes: 3
Score: 7.0000
----
Votes: 6
Score: 6.0000
----
Votes: 9

I predict a finishing score of about 4.6 ...

no cliff. an almost steady diet of 5's. more or less. like going to a hamburger place and just getting fries. no ketchup, no vinegar, no salt.
