...that GeneralE refers not to to the leader of some small South American republic, but to "General Eclectics", which is his little side hustle for things quirky & wonderful? Just askin' :-)

When I was working at the Berkeley Free Clinic in the late 1970s a few of us started playing and writing music together (there was a lot of down time between meetings), eventually forming two bands, one more folk/acoustic (The Children of Paradise) and one more wide-ranging* and amplified (Eclectic Shock). Since I was doing all the artwork and such, I adapted that as a business name, riffing on Edison's little sideline ....

When I got to DPC and saw most people used a screen-name I shortened that to GeneralE, since it also looked like what all the rappers and DJs were calling themselves, with the bonus (as Bear pointed out) that it also is Spanish for the head of some banana republic ...

*Side A of our album starts with "Sympathy For The Devil" and ends with "Gloria, In Excelcis Deo" and the theme from the TV western "Bonanza" (bet you didn't know there were words).

I don't have much of the old archival recordings online (yet), but you can hear my current band here:

Anyone who knows Cheers knows that!

I only saw Cheers in syndication/reruns and must have missed that episode. Our version was recorded about 1985 ...

Small world. I volunteered at the Berkeley Free Clinic in 1978 and 1979 or so. I don't remember folks getting a band together, but I was rather peripheral to the core group. At one point, the clinic had to move from space across the street from the Berkeley campus to the basement of a church around the corner. I was part of the crew tasked with getting the several-hundred-pound dental chair to the new location. We had about six or seven guys all around the device. Very slow process: count to three, call out "heave," grunt and lift. Each time, the chair moves about 18 inches. Count, "heave," grunt, thump. Count, "heave," grunt, thump. Half-way to the new location, a clueless guy asks "what are you doing?" In cadence came my reply: count, "heave," grunt, thump, "house call."

Took about 5 minutes of laughing before we could lift again. Now I wonder, were you one of the dental chair crew?

I was there from 1974 until about 1983, so if you went to any of the big general meetings you probably heard me yelling at some of the more misguided ... there was a "big split" in the summer of 1978 in the wake of Proposition 13 passing -- maybe you came along after that. I was mostly in Medical and Crisis Intervention -- I'm pretty sure I wasn't involved with moving the dental chair, though I still tell people about the Dental Section's famous all-dessert potlucks!
