Good on you, Mary Ann, you are a wonderful photographer :) So great that you will continue with DPC! Without members like you this place would never make 20 years.

I renewed also and try to participate as much as I can - in spite of some hard topics

Like I said at one point back in 2005: "That's it, I'm outta here!"

I don't have a camera/lens right now (don't ask). So I'm holding off on renewing my membership.. not that I can't afford it (just sold my condo). But, this time of year is lousy for shooting photos (outdoors) and the real estate market sucks (also shoot listings). Anyway, long story short, I'm shopping around.. doing price comparisons.. trying to figure out where I want to go from here. Archival works for me.. for now. Anyway, with or without a camera, I'm glad "this place" is still around. ;-)

After being gone a decade, I'm back because I'd find myself coming to get inspiration anyway. It will be the push I need to take more pictures and get out of my own head about whether it is "good" or "artistic" enough. I'm going to try to participate in entries more. And comments on pictures too, although truth be told, I feel wholly unqualified to make any critiques on such wonderful photographs. I'm glad most of you from a decade ago are still here. :)

i joined in 2006 .. that's nearly 16 years .. and have found great inspiration and happiness because of being in this group .. it has been a life saver over those years as well .. and that's literally ..

there were some years I didn't enter any challenges at all ..

but whether I'm participating or not I will continue to pay my yearly membership .. I will never allow it to lapse ..

I'm a great believer in gratitude .. not just feeling it .. but acting on it as well ...

so me continuing to be a member till the day I die is me showing my gratitude ..

part of the reason I found being a member in dpc so rewarding was the feedback and interest ppl showed in my photos ..

so I like to pay it forward by commenting on other ppls photos .. comments that come from the heart ..
and often not from the head .. that's a bit of a joke at my own expense .. ;)

have a great week everyone .. xx

I've never understood why people feel unqualified to make any critiques on photos? I'm wondering if they've received push back from people receiving the comments? While I do have my handful of people from whom I'd go crazy, jump up and down, and run around the room a couple of times if I received a comment from them, I appreciate all comments. Even the ones that I sit and stew about for a day or two before I stop thinking that the person was an idiot for not loving my photo (just kidding! Kind of! :)

Don't think of a critique as an extremely knowledgable person analyzing your photograph and breaking it down into it's building blocks. That type of critique always boggles me. How can anyone know what Hemmingway meant by placing the spoon next to the knife instead of the fork? You can delve all you want into the psyche of the person creating the photo, but that's not what's important.

What's important is -- how did it make you feel? Did you feel anything? Did I create something that will stay with you for the rest of your life? Or did a create something completely, totally and utterly forgettable? You're not saying that the world will forget it. You're saying that it didn't mean anything to YOU.

It's the individual's reaction that's important. Not what they think the world will "think".

I also like to know what works and what doesn't work. If you don't like it, if it didn't make an impression, is there something I could have done differently to make it sing? Or was the idea so bad there was nothing that could redeem it?

As long as a comment given is what you think, it's always right. Because it's your opinion. The person receiving it doesn't have to agree, but they now know whether they succeeded in getting their point across to you. And that is so important!

I'm here, too, until the lights go out...and hopefully we have some time.

A few months ago I was complaining about Mita's disappearance and the hope of a new and improved DPC
being completely quashed. Not long after that Mita pm'd me and said that he had turned the project over to
a developer and there was hope but that it was taking a long time and he had no idea when it would be finished.

In essence he said that he still owns the site, he would welcome investors and that Langdon still helps out when
they hit a major roadblock. He also said he was very busy with his day job.

I've decided that things work just as they are and there are good people here keeping it running and working hard without
thanks and pay. There are still a lot of talented people here and there is always inspiration. This has always been a good thing
and I am grateful that it is still ticking.

Also, it is widely held that most of the benefit of writing a comment accrues to the commenter, not necessarily to the photographer. Articulating what you like/don't like about a photo (in which you have no investment) will help you figure out out to better take/make your own images.

And if the photographer doesn't like the comment it's their problem, not yours, unless they respond with a threat or obscenity in which case report them and it will still (again) be their problem ...

I have no wisdom to add, just unlimited gratitude.

This place means everything to me as the photographer that I am.

And I'm *very* happy with the photographer that I am.

Thank you, DPC community.

I didn't even think twice when mine came up for renewal recently.

This evening I asked a fellow member for an opinion for my "Best of 2021 - Standard" entry. I have only five candidates, none of which would normally even be on my short list. As I told him in my pm, "Best of 2021. Such a paucity of images to choose from . . . 2020 and now 2021 . . .
Anyway, here's what I salvaged. Almost everything of "worth" I had was created for or used in DPC challenges along the way. Actually, I shudder to think what my 2021 collection would have looked like without the challenges that I shot for."

That pretty much says it for me. Thank you all!!

Thank you VaWendy and others for your comments. I do comment when an image grabs me, and I’m impressed and tickled by the clever shots people take. I guess the word I’m looking for is humbled. But I keep learning and pushing forward.
I’m eager to get good at “magical” or “mystical” shots. Landscapes that could belong in imaginations and books. I strive to get my vision of my challenges to feel right. So yes, I’m excited for this year. Thank you!
