Abstracts are just not popular with the DPC collective. I learned this a long time ago. It takes a lot just to get a "meh" average.

Now that I see this thread, I'm feeling better. I was bummed that I was sub 6. Now I know I'm not alone, and I'm in good company.

It's an archival challenge so I typically vote a little harsher.
If one has their entire history of photos at their disposal, it stands to reason the entries should be elevated compared to similar challenges with the time line restriction.

You know when think of Abstract, I obviously will never ever have any concept of what it is, but I am guessing a couple of sharp pointy bits is def needed lol =P

there was exactly one challenge where the blue ribbon was sub-6. I wonder if we can manage to repeat that feat? Looks like we are going in that direction.

With "abstract" we are on a very thin ice. Anything and nothing goes. The votes somehow will not say much in this challenge. Same for the pinhole one. The bottom line is, like always: does the image have any impact on you?
As for my score (low 5 so far, what's new), does it matter? Will I endorse my image? Probably not. Will I print it for later viewing? Perhaps in a very large format, as a wall covering for a conference on a similar subject? Small as a post stamp?
I wish I can comment on a lot of the images without hurting anybody's feeling. Is abstract a macro? Good discussion topic
