I shot a wedding for a friend. How many photos do you provide for a particular wedding? I keep trying to whittle them down. 500 seemed to many, 240 seems like a lot especially since I haven’t seen my second shooter’s photos. But it seems like I’m getting rid of a number of good options.

I'm no wedding photographer, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt (or maybe a box?) ;-)
I'd provide 100 or so fully edited, and as many others as you have that you consider good shots with minimal editing, i.e. just basic global adjustments. If they want additional photos edited, at that point you could do it as a separate job.

You should provide what you originally agreed upon.

If that wasn't discussed, then you have to figure out a reasonable number for the time it takes you to edit them versus what you got paid.

If you didn't really discuss the individual aspects of the event, better do it now before you spend too much time on any particular area.

Do they want the two of them? Do they want group shots? Are the more inclined toward the candids? Actual ceremony? Reception? Formal portraits? Of them? Of the family?

And if they're friends, you will probably be expected to produce more than if you were a straight-up hire.

My daughter's getting married in about a year. The wedding photog's plan we picked is going to cost $7K.

It is NOT a destination wedding.

But this photog is the best I've ever seen and she is so on top of how the whole process works.

In case you want to see....

The caliber of this woman is everything about why I am not, and don't want to be, a wedding photographer.

I used to shoot weddings and the number I gave them was however many I shot that told their story with good, unique photos. I didn’t ever give a bunch of pictures that were so similar that none of them stood out. It usually ended up being between 250 and 300. I edited all of them, which is why I don’t shoot weddings anymore, haha. Even a good going rate was not enough money to make editing 300 pictures worth it for me. Most of my brides ordered coffee table books and a DVD so 250 to 300 was a good amount to do a really nice book.
