Just to preface this with a comment that I'm NOT complaining about this in any way, but I don't think I've ever seen such a big difference before so thought I'd share. Just before I went to bed I had a 6.4 with 22 votes.

Place: 14 out of 46
Avg (all users): 6.0714

Sorry, Sarah. But 28 votes is too small a pool to offer an explanation.

Free Study lasts a whole month and some folks work hard at their submissions and choices. At 46 images it doesn’t take too long to vote for your peers.

I also noticed that there were only 14 comments given to this challenge, overall, during voting.

We need to do better. I will try and lead by example… vote sooner leaving time to review/bump, and more comments, especially on FS.

I gave it a 5 (participant). Didn’t like the eyes and the Rembrandt lighting seemed a little harsh to me. I think I would have cropped in a lot, at least to the elbows. That being said, I think it is a beautiful model and a well done portrait. I was considering a 6 and I should have given it that.

just to be a bit of a devil's advocate ..
i thought she was what a gorgeous woman .. and a great image ..
i love your tones and light on this and the way the eyes pop .. :)

dpc has changed a whole lot from back in the day when there were so many entries and so many comments and votes .. we would get a more 'realistic' idea of how our images stacked up etc .. more balanced ..

oh well .. thank goodness i'm now shooting more for myself than second guessing what the voters would like .. altho it would be nice if we were more synced .. lol .. ;)

but when i see the quality of the other photos in the challenges i enter i'm usually blown away and am a bit in awe of some ppl's imagination and technical abilities .. you probably know who you are .. !! .. ;)

I completely understand the being curious and surprised when there's such a huge difference.

I gave it a 5. I didn't really like the photo. I thought the POV was uncomfortable; it seemed to distort the body and have the head and eyes almost looking over the viewer. The shadows were a bit too deep without adding moodiness. And it seemed cropped too close to the top of the head. I think even just tipping the head down a bit would have made it much more striking. It would have turned it into more an intense connection with the eyes and the camera. Instead, we're just kind of looking up her nose.

(ok, this seems a bit harsh. But I did find myself looking at this one quite a bit when voting. The overall technique felt like it should have worked well, so I found it odd that it bothered me that much. (sorry!)

Its interesting how we both ended up with the same score but with 2 remarkably different scoring ranges. It seems as if the viewers of your image either really liked it or not whereas mine was more middle of the road. That being said I liked yours and thought it would do better.

I try to make this a goal as often as possible ...

Here's another one with a massive difference:
Place: 3 out of 21
Avg (all users): 6.5833
Avg (participants): 5.7500
Avg (non-participants): 7.0000

What I find most alarming is that only 8 participants voted on it.

Drat drat drat!! I started voting yesterday, but got caught up in commenting and didn't finish voting. I didn't realize that I hadn't finished. :(

I would have given yours and Anita's both 8s.

Thanks Wendy.

What I’d like to know is why did only 8 participants vote?? With so few entries you really have no excuse IMHO. There are seven days to vote, that’s a long time really in the scheme of things. You could of gotten away with voting on three a day, not a lot to ask.

I've created tables of scores for participants, non-participants and all votes, and the only consistency among them is that Wendy would have got a blue. Based on non-participants alone, I'd have shared the blue with her. However on participant votes I'd have only got joint 6th, not even an honourable mention.

Another stat I keep an occasional eye on (mostly during voting) is the difference between views and votes. Usually there's about a 2:1 ratio -- I presume as people scroll through quickly once and then go back and vote or adjust votes. But sometimes (today it's Camouflage) there are four times as many views as votes ...

I gave this a seven during voting.

I have no idea why it didn't score higher.

(I did not participate in the challenge.)
