Hey all, apologies if this is already covered, but I often am rolling GoPro footage while doing Enduro and off road antics with friends, and frames taken from the footage can be really cool images - just wondering if there is rules against using captured frames from HD footage for image submissions, and the second part of that question is - is there a best practice for how one would subsequently submit the 'raw' with metadata, without having to send the full video file. Typically I just clip frames out from VLC then edit in LRC but if premier pro will get the needed metadata in the exported frames that could be an option as well.

The current rules don't allow for frames extracted from video -- the individual image needs to have its own EXIF data.
As you point out, validating a frame from a lengthy video presents a new level of difficulty we're not likely to take on right now.
You are welcome to post them in your Portfolio and show them off, just not use them for challenges (at least for now). |

It's an interesting question, and one that may depend on the device... the use of a video frame is completely legal, *if* it contains valid EXIF. I'm guessing that the VLC frame grab would not, but don't know for sure. You could submit a ticket with a test file for us to look at. The Premiere option could be tested as well.

| I just tried exporting a frame from an old version of Premiere (5.1) and it definitely does not include valid EXIF (or similar) data -- but no idea if this has changed in the past 23 years ... :-) |

Agreed an interesting angle to see the things differently for sure and might bring in some new levels in the submission :)

Thanks for the replies - all. I may poke around with Premier and see if frame extraction from HD Video with adequate metadata is possible, else I understand the rules and no problem. The only other workaround I could think of would be to engage the GoPro's in continuous image mode and then just go through the sd card of jpegs for the events I think might be worthy :)

If it can operate in the equivalent of "burst mode" for an indefinite period (and it records valid EXIF) this should work -- if you have Premiere you should be able to import all of the frames and turn it into a movie afterward. |

GoPro (from Hero 5 up) has time lapse mode that can be set to either save the final product as a video file or as individual jpeg files. The jpegs are full exif files.
