Yet another very specific topical challenge I won't be participating in.

I want more free studies. Beginning to think I don't belong here.

It's actually fairly open than some of the topic-specific challenges of the past.

I have a feeling a lot of people will go with the "personal hero" idea, and everyone will receive comments saying "How does this meet the challenge?" ;)

The only advice I can give is to take a picture you're happy with and that meets the challenge in your eyes, and don't let yourself get depressed about the voters not agreeing. Easier said than done though...I haven't managed it yet myself.

It's not really a subject that the voter can say whether the photographer has met the challenge or not. Of course that has not stopped some voters in the past.

Can this be a self portrait??? LOL just kidding

Well it could be a self-protrait, of yourself impersonating a hero (Halloween anyone?).

It would definitely a plus to write a little something about your hero(es) in the details box.

I simply mean that the types of topics that often occur here are not the type that I want to shoot for. So I end up missing out on the fun of participating and the inspiration to go out and shoot.

I am not interested in going out and photographing police, firemen, poor people, or for that matter, any people I don't know. These types of topics are instant: "take a week off" for me. Problem is, they seem to occur very often.

I was just disappointed and felt like sharing ;)

nshapiro, what happened to Superman, King Arthur, Neo and friends? They sure ain't firemen, but they can be a whole lot of fun to set up...

DO you think taking a photograph of a photo would do well?

No, it may get DQed unless you used a photo in some other context.
Artwork. Literal photographic representations of the entirety of existing works of art (including your own) are not considered acceptable submissions, however creative depictions or interpretations are permissible. This includes, but is not limited to paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and computer artwork.

Your hero is someone you dont know? You are saying there is no one that you know that you look up to or are inspired by? No one you wanted to grow up and be just like them? No one you know that has overcome something or is just generally a good overall person that you think would be a good role model?

Even out of the context of the challenge you could always just look at it like an open portrait challenge and photograph anyone under the pretext of it being a hero.

That said, if you dont like the topic then dont enter. And not to be confused with the 'well if you dont like it, leave' comments that are normally thrown out when someone doesnt like it, but there are other photography contest websites that have no specific themes that you can enter while you wait for topics that do appeal to you.

You cant please everyone all of the time, so enjoy the topics you do enjoy and do something else on the weeks you dont.

Don't mean this to sound like a 'go away then' comment. I really don't mean it that way. But the whole point of dpc is based around the idea of specific, themed challenges. If you really don't like those, then it probably isn't the best outlet for your talents.

Of course you should feel welcome to stay, participate, enter, vote, comment as much as you want - we want you around! but I think the free studies are almost missing the point of 'pushing' people to try new things by having specific challenges. Sure its nice to take a picture that you'd probably have taken anyway and get it voted upon, but it is heading away from what the place was original and still mostly is, about.

//www.betterphoto.com or //www.digitalphotocontest.com are a couple of sites worth having a look at, for less themed competitions. Fairly certain ( ;) ) they don't have exclusivity contracts either, so you can always participate at all of them. Though you'll find the dpchallenge has a much stronger community than either of those sites.

The descriptions says take a photo that illustrates a hero, not take a picture of a hero. I don't think this has to be a portrait at all.
