Looking at the stats of past few challenges, I still conclude that consistently approx. 50% of the participants is not voting (let alone commenting).

Why? Is 50% only here to receive and not give?

If have seen the argument that some think it is not fair to vote when one is participating. I can't see that unless you are so immature to have your own score influence the score you give to others.

In my view this site depends on active participation and feedback.

This has been a long standing fact and there have been many discussions. Personally, I don't understand the participants' thinking and have been told assertively that the rules can't change.

So, I have decided to keep entering my votes, comment when the mood strikes, and enter without worrying about my score too much because it means nothing when the other competitors aren't playing game.

Resounding agreement. If you make a meal for your family, do you sit down at the table and not eat?

There is always a certain percentage of people who don't feel it's right to vote/comment on a challenge where they participate. It can be considered a conflict of interest.

There are some people who grasp at the simple pleasure of walking away from a chaotic life and have time only for a few minutes respite to enter.

I will never understand why people on this site get so indignant at how others derive their enjoyment from this site, especially since there truly are very few hard and fast rules.

This thread, taken literally could be construed as a statement that should one not vote and/or comment, then don't enter.

Nobody wants that, right?

I have been guilty of not voting/commenting when my life gets busy. I just entered "Sun in Frame III" in the 11th hour last night 'cause I found twenty minutes to mine my archives.

This is a VERY busy time at our shop right now and don't know if I'll get time to vote......should I not have entered?

Actually, sometimes, yes. :-}

I've often been guilty of not voting but with the decline in numbers I've been forcing myself to do it.

Don’t draw this into the extreme. I can understand if people now and again don’t have time, either for entering or voting. But to consistently see only 50% .... ?

Um.... And this isn't extreme???

I've seen this same circular argument about not voting entered challenges time and again. I understand it. Perception of impropriety does not necessarily translate into immature.

Newbies may not know any better.....at one point, I was under the impression it was frowned on to vote challenges you entered. Again, nothing etched in stone, but people voiced their opinin as such.

But that was also when you had easily over 100 entries in regular challenges and upwards of 250 for Free Studies.

I've been here a week or two, and read a forum post or so as well.

I can see people shying away from entering if they think it's implied that they *should* allocate the time and they're not sure they can.

Maybe we've already lost people because of it. No effort required to post images on FaceBook.

Why do we care about our scores?

Isn't this site about trying to meet a challenge and then get feedback on your results, preferably in the form of comments but also in the form of votes, so to learn to look differently at ones own image and understand how it might be seen by other people? Therefore it is all about participation.

Well even with voting participation down it is still feedback, and I am glad for any I get without wanting to prod the masses for more.

hey Timothy .. i'm wondering if this is a serious comment ..
many of the ppl here are very attached to the outcome of their photos in the challenges .. and fair enough .. we're all different .. some ppl may not care and others do .. there's no right or wrong ..
maybe we should change this site entirely and make it so there are no votes at all and only comments .. ;) .. said in jest of course .. :) .. but ppl keep saying part of the beauty of dpc is that we grow as photographers because of the input ..
but increasingly i find that there are less comments to go with the votes .. and i dont really learn much at all from the votes .. especially when there's no comment to explain it .. and i'm talking the low and the high votes ..
anyway .. i saw this thread and thought i'd stick in my opinion .. :)

It was and wasn't a serious question. in fact I find the spread of votes on entries, mine and others, of some interest. I guess I just wonder what we can reasonably expect of participants at present. Most of us are older than we were when we joined and we have changed. (If anyone is NOT older and has NOT changed, please keep it to yourself). My interest these days is sporadic, although I confess I do try to vote in challenges I enter and in ones that interest me.

ps .. talking about voting must get busy voting on sun in frame and pink floyd .. havent seen any of the entries yet .. i'm sure there'll be some stand outs .. :)

i just noticed you had replied to my comment Timothy .. lucky i came back into the thread or you'd be thinking i was ignoring you .. ;)
i also find the spread of votes interesting as well .. but confusing too ..
back in the day .. there were so many entries and votes and comments that if you didnt vote in a challenge you were entered in .. it didnt make much difference .. theses days its a different animal entirely .. every vote counts .. just about ..

and hahaha .. funny comment about if anyone is NOT older and has NOT changed please keep it to yourself .. i did actually laugh out loud ... definitely my kinda humour ..

i'm a bit sporadic voting etc too .. for a long while i had such bad internet speeds that voting would have been something i'd take on if i was a masochist .. yesterday for instance i had .61mbs/sec downloadspeed .. right now its reached the dizzying heights of 8.81 .. at least that's high enough for me to vote ..
but i dont think votes are the things that help us grow as photograhpers .. its the comments that have that potential .. a low or high vote without a comment leaves you wondering .. why ..??..

Although it's great to get a reasonable score (!) I find it easier to take a hey-ho approach to the final tally but sometimes I am curious as to what is so bad about an image to receive a 1 ... as was the case with my smoke entry.

It is not surprising that with fewer participants they are fewer votes and fewer comments. The solution is not raise the percentage of participants voting and commenting. The solution is to raise the number of participants! I think the best way to get more participants is to give a real prize to winners. It doesn’t have to be a lot and it doesn’t have to be with each challenge. Maybe start with the monthly Free Study. In order to pay for the prize, we could seek a sponsor. I would bet that any number of sellers would love to have the ear of our avid photographers. B&H, Adorama, Canon, Nikon, Sony and who know who else would love a chance to sell us something. A small advertisement in their newsletters would gain lots of participants. I have loved this site for years but it is unfortunately withering away. This site is a tremendous resource to any photographer. It deserves better participation and with that - Votes and Comments will happen.

I agree. I will take what I get, ruminate on how it pans out for me relative to the average and my own perceptions.

It's a *very* useful tool.

I have one in Sun in Frame that is heartily tanking.

I'll prolly start a thread afterwards to see if anyone wants to tell me where I dove off the cliff.
