Hey guys, I need some advice/help.
I put my Sony 100-400mm up on facebook marketplace and Fred Miranda.
Someone tried to scam me on marketplace. The sent me a fake paypal "money received" email and wanted me to send the lens. After I told them that "there seemed to be a problem with paypal, and they may want to go through the facebook marketplace payment" I never heard anything else. (it was obviously a scam, but it was still fun sending the email and having them disappear.
Anyway, here's the
QUESTIONS: It sounds like people scam sellers by sending paypal, and as soon as the item is sent, the rescind the payment.
1. If I've already transferred the money to my bank account, can they still rescind it?
2. What can I do, to not get scammed, if I end up selling an expensive lens and shipping it?
Thanks! I'm nervous about this one, because she didn't ask any questions about the lens.

| Sorry Wendy, I don't have an answer but I am curious as to any feedback in this thread. I recently made a purchase on Facebook Marketplace (small $125 item) and it was a new experience. Have been an eBay buyer / seller for a long time. I also have something I want to try and sell on Marketplace (worth about $400) but not sure of the "what if" scenarios either. |

I don't have a clear answer for you either, it's a huge concern these days. One optioin might be to use a shipment method where you can get a tracking number created and provided while still holding the package for drop-off. That way if they rescind you can halt the shipment.

| You could put the burden of trust on them and have them send you a US Postal Money Order prior to shipping -- you can cash it at the Post Office where they can verify it's genuine. Every other place I've ordered online requires payment (e.g. credit card) prior to shipping ... |

| I had same option for CraigsList and FB Market place, I ask for Cash and local pickup for one my 150-600 Canon lens. It did go out eventually but cash pickup only. I understand that reduce the scope to local area only :( |

so sorry it took so long to get back to this. It's been a very busy time.
So I sold one of the lenses through facebook Marketplace and one through Fred Miranda.
The person who tried to scam me was through facebook marketplace. The recommend that you don't sell to people off marketplace unless they're local. The lens was purchased by someone in Maryland who drove down 3 hours to get it. I asked for cash, and that worked.
The Fred Miranda sale was also to someone who was local. Since I'm not a Fred Miranda user, he said he wouldn't have purchased from me if it wasn't local. I sold that lens for $1900. He couldn't get that much cash out of the atm in a day. So we met at a branch of his bank, he tried the lens a bit, and then we went in to get a cashier's check. But then I found out that those could still be cancelled, so he said "how about cash". So I got cash.
What I've learned is to trust your instincts. The person who tried to scam me did offer a lower price, but then didn't ask any questions about the lens. Most people who still ask it's condition, or why were you selling? Although, that being said, the guy who bought my expensive lens didn't ask many questions. But since it was local, I gave it a shot.
I ended up just going with people with whom I had longer conversations. I asked about their camera, why they were buying, etc.
There was no way of telling facebook about the scam.
Also, I found in multiple places, that the scam was people who actually send the money through paypal and then cancel the transaction after you shipped the item. I was not able to find what happens if you already withdraw the money. |

If you have already moved the money from the paypal-linked account when the funds are reversed, I believe (from very 3rd-hand information I vaguely remember) that paypal will suspend your account and possibly mark the lack of funds as fraudulent and/or have the bank provide the fund and put your account into an overdrawn state, neither of which are a desirable situation to be in.

We sell a moderate amount of prints & ceramics thru our gallery and have never had any issues with PayPal. I've also used mine fairly often for payment. No issues.
Where I've run into *constant* scams is selling vehicles thru Craigslist. I get people from five states away saying they'll send a cashier's check and $200 or some such number for the effort of going to the bank and depositing it. They *never* quibble about the price, and *always* have some lame excuse as to why they're unable to view the vehicle (Busy work schedule, Covd exposure, I trust you) before coughing up X thousands of dollars.
No experience with FB, but hey..... Facebook for doing business??? I'd be leery of that.
The smartest thing is to do your best to get a good feel for your customer and cash is best.......but not at 1:00A.M. in a lonely alley.....
