Last thread on this seems to be 2018 so wondering if there's more up to date advice out there...

Having lugged my trusty Nikon D500 up yet another Scottish mountain I have come to the conclusion there's too much pain for too little gain! I am now on the hunt for something lighter that will fit easily into my day sack. It will mostly be used for landscape (assuming the clouds lift and I get a view) but I wouldn't turn down a zoom option if it didn't compromise quality. My first scout through the retailers came up with the Panasonic Lumix LX15/L10 which retails in the UK at approx £400. Whilst I do have the funds for this, I was rather hoping for something a little cheaper. That said, I don't want to regret spending less on an inferior product. I've looked at second hand but have been stung in the past so (usually) prefer to buy new.

Grateful for any advice/words of wisdom.

The Sony RX100 VII is a good little camera with a 24-200mm equivalent zoom, but it's probably outside your price range. Perhaps you can find an earlier version at a decent price.

MargaretNet has done really well in challenges using the RX100 VI.

I've got the RX100 VI and can fully recommend it. The RX100iii is cheaper, but still an absolutely great camera

Same here. I bought it after the local music festival told me I couldn't bring my a6000 into concert venues because it had a removable lens making it a "professional camera". The photos from the RX100 were as good and I had more reach.

RX100 III only has a 24-70mm zoom BUT it's a faster lens.

Just remembered - the other camera I considered when I bought my Sony was the Canon PowerShot G5X Mark II. I don't remember the exact specifications but the zoom is somewhere between what the RX100 III and the RX100VII have and it has a fast lens like the RX100 III has. The focusing system isn't as good as the RX100 VII but I'm not sure how it compares to earlier versions. And the Canon has a better touch screen.

The original G5X, if you can find stock, is a great choice, as is the RX100 III. Later versions of the RX100 are going to be more expensive than you probably want to consider.

Thanks folks. Some great suggestions and lots of food for thought. I expect my bank balance will restrict options - at the moment leaning to the Sony Rx100 III. If I had a spare £500 I'd upgrade to the Mk 7 or Canon Powershot in a heartbeat.....maybe this week's lottery!

Good luck. It's not an easy decision. I was only able to buy the Sony RX100 VII because it was available at a very special price at the time.

Let us know what you decide.

Wanted to post earlier but was at work when I noticed this thread.

Another possible consideration? Sony HX-80 or HX-99. I own both and have used the 80 more frequently because I carry it for Scouting outdoor activities.

They're both rated well. The HX-99 is newer with touch screen, RAW, better video, etc. I love the pop-up eye piece.

Worth a look if you're interested.

Here's a comparison to the Sony RX100 VI.

Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I have still RX100 II that I kept for underwater shots and an underwater housing for it. Unfortunately Lake Geneva is no Great Barrier Reef and I have no plans to travel to the tropics any more so they are both available if you wanted them. They would not be worth more than 100 pounds both but I will check if anyone is interested.

G5X is not the most modern version, but still working great. Lol, looks like I'm the only one here using that camera, so I'm not sure if that is a good recommendation :)

The Canon Powershot G7X Mark II is a rock solid compact camera.

Having said that, I sold mine as I was either using my iPhone or Canon 5D Mark IV and found little need for the Canon Powershot G7X Mark II.

But it was very good :)

Thanks to all of you for your advice and suggestions. There’s good news and bad news.....Having completely fallen in love with the idea of the Sony RX 100 VII it quickly became apparent I couldn’t afford it. That was the bad news.

The good news is that when I went back to stare longingly at the sales page of my favourite camera shop I noticed it was on offer until 25th June with a reduction of £200 Sterling and the opportunity to pay for half and spread rest out, interest free, over the next five months. That was the good news.

Then there was a problem with the order.....bad news

Contacted shop who gave me another £30 off...good news

It’s being delivered on Thursday......

You lot are dangerous when it comes to spending my money. Thank you! I’m so excited!

That's AWESOME! Enjoy. :-D

Congratulations. It's a wonderful little camera.

Now I'll have some competition for the highest score with that camera.

Yeh, that's a nice piece of kit!
I think you will be very impressed with the performance.

Excellent choice!

Sometimes stretching finances is a good idea. I am sure you will enjoy your new toy a lot, I carry my VI with me most of the time, it is so easy when a great camera is so small and light :)

Well, thank you all! A third place with on a LANDSCAPE! I don’t usually get on with landscapes.....And all because I took my amazing new camera up a mountain. I have so many great memories from that day and the others I spent on holiday climbing a few Scottish Munros. I’d never have them if I didn’t have my new pocket rocket Sony in my day sack! I owe my newest ribbon to your advice and guidance. Love it.

Congratulations. Now add the camera to your profile and photo details so people researching that camera can see what it's capable of.

Yes, congrats indeed. Now ... you should add this camera to your profile! :-)

Oh I've tried to add my camera but until today I haven't had the time to try and work out how to do it; it's been a while since the last Tim I added one. And then, when I found the 'add a camera' link I couldn't see the Sony RX100 Mk 7 on the list. But that's odd because I know some of you have listed it. So what am I doing wrong?

Have got to profile, add a camera, selected camera (Sony) and then clicked on model but only older models are shown.

Help. Please.

I think you first need to request it to be added to the database. The VII is not there, only the VI.
