This is what I have been up to:
Virtual Drone for 100
My friend's mother turned 100 today so this was part of my virtual birthday card for her :)

PS If you are on a slow connection it might take a while to download.

Beautifully done. What is involved in making this? Do you design and draw from scratch? Or pick and choose and then compose available elements? Any own pictures used?

Way cool, Margaret! Thank you for showing us!

I'm also interested in the answers to Willem's questions.

I'm sure she loved it!!

Thanks! It is a very difficult area to learn, I have been working on it since September last year. I first starting learning Blender ad Maya, both 3D modeling and animation software then I discovered Unreal Engine (it is free for hobbyists!). Unreal is 3D gaming software that is also used for architectural visualization and by film and advertising industries. It is really what I like the best - creating an arrangement from existing components and filming them. I am also learning now the basics of cinematography (you can have multiple cameras, camera rails and cranes like on a real movie set) and lighting the scene. It is a very creative process and I love it!

To answer Wilem's question - I use some components that I created from scratch like the rocking chair and the street light in my recent entry. I took photos of these and recreated them in 3D. But I prefer to work on assembling different components available in free Unreal Engine libraries and focus on the atmosphere, choice and arrangement of props, lighting and camera movements.

This video started as a still life virtual photography project :) I studied Mary Ann's beautiful still life creations, assembled the environment, built the table from the floor boards, selected pumpkin and pears from a Megascan library, added flowers and imported the cake from a 3D model. The candle flame and the main butterfly are animations, the group of butterflies uses a particle system embedded in Unreal Engine. I made a video of this setup but you can also walk through the forest, look under the table etc, everything is in 3D. I will make an interactive version of this environment in future. I love the foggy birch forest! :)

For those interested check out these examples of building environment from pre-existing components in Unreal:

This is a follow up from another thread but I thought I will revive this one. After 3 months break due to the unexpected life circumstances I am back into 3D, latest video:
Creek Hut Mystery

It started as a virtual drone idea for the 3D environment where I took this shot:

but then the axe in the door got in the way ;)

I guess no interest at all :(

There are many meshes, props, animations, images and special effects in this scene. It took a few weeks, I had a lot of fun doing this and I learned a bit more about this fascinating and difficult discipline :)

I'm interested but haven't got the time to try it myself. I tried to watch your video last night but my internet was playing up so I only got about half way. I liked what I saw though, especially the cat and the bird. Hopefully I'll still manage to see the whole thing.

Thanks, Gina. My fault about the slow download, I absolutely had it with Youtube and now also Vimeo - too much pushy advertising and control so I just uploaded the video to my Website without a streaming application. You are welcome to downloaded first and then view it :)

I'll try that. For some reason my internet connection always works fine for YouTube but is very stop-start with Vimeo, and this is acting the same way.

That was much better. You did a really good job with that. Looks like really hard work.
