I was honestly slightly disappointed with result of my Vanishing Point entry:

I thought it was a good one, but probably not enough for the specific challenge. Anyways, I wanted to share I how managed to get a shot with the rainbow because it was not just luck, I planned it in some way and in this video I explain why (it's in Italian but I added subtitles):

How to get a shot with a rainbow

Very nice video. You have some great other shots in there as well (and on your website)

Good attitude "I was born wet", i.e. don't mind the weather, get out there.

In my experience a rainbow usually last only a few minutes, because often there are intermittent clouds, which either cause the rain or the sunshine. Both are needed, although not in exactly the same place.

And then you need to have a good location as well to make something special out of it, like your picture in the challenge.

I thought it missed the mark on meeting the challenge compared to other entries.

Thanks Willem! I've always had in my mind a shot like that with a rainbow. I live by the sea and the changeable conditions were perfect. In these cases you can't be sure, but I enoyed trying!

That's what I thought. Honestly when I chose this one I was sure it could fit the challenge but I was obviously wrong. In case it was ok, not complaining at all about that.

I really liked the way the water was coming up over the pier, that, coupled with the walk going away into the distance made a kind of double vanishing point, but unfortunately, for me it was marred by the person.

Just my take, FWIW.

Che piacere vedere il tuo video Alex e ricordando il mio arrugginito italiano.

Your photos are always interesting (but you know by now not to expect high marks form fellow DPCers).
Your shot was excellent but Ugo obstructed the wretched vanishing point!

Tuttavia, chiede a Ugo di cambiare idea sul posare per te.

You're amazing, Alex!

I think I agree that it would have scored much higher in a different challenge topic. Some folks, most likely, voted lower because your amiable model blocked the vanishing point.

Doesn't matter... it's still an amazing accomplishment!

I'd like to throw in my two cent's worth regarding the challenge suitability of this otherwise wonderful image, in the form of a question posed to those of you who think the voters are not open-minded enough:

"Imagine this image ending with the edge of the dock where the figure is now (in other words, remove the figure and the dock ends there). Would you consider that version of the image an excellent depiction of a "vanishing point"?

Interesting point Bear.
Nice image from all pov but in my opinion dock images are a dime a dozen and lost the surprise element. No one can be original all the time.

So, the problem is that the vanishing point has vanished?

Downright Hitchcockian, innit? :-)

This is the kind of energy DPC needs. I love that you went above-and-beyond in getting into the science and technique.
As for the image, I too think, in this particular composition, the person there seems to take away rather than add to the image. It's not so much that he is blocking the vanishing point as much as it feels like he has no reason for being there. Lovely regardless though.

Expanding on this, I find myself wondering if the model had been *lying down" on the dock whether his head might have been the apex, the vanishing point, and it might have been a majorly mysterioso image :-)

Thanks everyone for the comments! I already mentioned that, but I want to do it again - it was not a complaining post, it's ok with the votes I got :)

I started with my YouTube channel to share my contents in different ways and I realized how important has been DPC for me throughout the years I spent as a photographer. Sometimes I feel like I should have decided to run it in English but I knew it would be harder in the first weeks. The more I go on the more I think it would be awesome to add some contents in English.

PS. for Mariuca: il tuo italiano รจ ancora molto buono!
