Hey all, I am looking for a free photo hosting site...Photobucket is no longer free and in fact I got a very rude message when I logged into my account to get photos out of there.

I see Wix seems to be leading the field. Anyone have any other recommendations or have had experience with Wix?

Did you try google site? if you get domain from google (same price no difference than outside) then you can host your images over there.

I saw that Google was #2 on the list of top ten free photo hosting sites. Wix was listed #1.

As far as I know wix is a website builder and website host, not just a repository for photos. And even if using it for building a website only basic features are free, as with anything these days you do tend to have to pay.

It is free up to a limited number of images - I've got an account with them as I was thinking of changing my service provider. It's got some great features, but free it's up to 500 mb after that it's a paid for service.

No, they claim unlimited free image storage, unless they have literally just changed it in which case it's a bait and switch. But in the link I included it says unlimited.

Why don't you try it? Nothing to lose since it's free, right? But I can assure you it's not unlimited storage (even for a paid account)

Ok I stand corrected....but wondering why that top ten list would miss that 500MB thing? It was only from Oct 2020. Anyway will give it a try.

Don't use Adobe anymore. Switched to Affinity. Thanks for the thought though!

Remind me, how much space are you looking for, and what features (if any) do you need?
03/02/2021 12:05:09 PM · #13
What you need depends on what you are trying to do.

File Backup - this is where you keep copies your original files. Following some variation of a 3-2-1 strategy (3 copies, 2 different types of media, at least one off-site), you have plenty of options, depending on the number of files and how much disk space they actually use.

Image Hosting - this is where you keep copies of files intended for the internet, typically for display through a website. Again, lots of options.

The most important thing is not to confuse the two or to assume that you need to have both in the same place. For instance, you can register your own domain for $10-20 a year (or more or less) and you can host your own website. There is where you would "host" the files for your website. However, there are most likely some size and bandwidth limitations that would not lend itself to serving as your "file backup".

Along these lines, you have need a clear understanding as to just what files you need to host. You do not need to host huge honking files. Most files really only need to be 720px on the longest side, no more than 150kb in size (typically, they can be under 100kb, even with a watermark). You might have a handful of images that are larger, but that should be very rare. Keep in mind your audience: are your visitors coming in on a phone or device, or computer with a LARGE monitor? Do you visitors need to see LARGE images or does it really matter?

Another consideration is your site's platform and whether you have access to the server file system (at least as far as accessing your site's folders). For example, if you have a WordPress site and use standard media tools for uploading images to your site, WordPress will create multiple copies of each file for about every type of crop imaginable. On one hand, the file sizes aren't much, but they really do impact the file count. And to what end? 10 years ago, server-side overhead and throughput were major concerns. Having a site that could quickly pick the appropriate resource to send back to the browser was critical. Today, not so much. You can save tons of space and not have that much of a performance hit by only having single copies of your image files - as long as they aren't huge honking files. Your ability to do this, though, depends on the software you use to manage your site and whether or not you can actually manage the files yourself.

Now, if you do use a self-hosting solution, don't be tempted to use that space for your file backup. You still need to find something appropriate. It might be that your file backup solution can also serve as your image hosting solution, but that will take some research to determine the true cost as well as to calculate the overhead both in terms of bandwidth and coding (for example, hosting your images through Amazon Web Services is a possibility, but connecting your website to your Amazon "buckets" is not a trivial, automatic task).

There are plenty issues and options; hopefully this should be enough to get you started.

Good luck!
