I don't sell on eBay that frequently - a few items a year. Been doing that for about 15 years now. Received an email today that if I don't provide my SSN and bank account information I won't be able to create any listings after Feb 1st. Personally, I'm not comfortable giving that info to eBay and trusting them to keep it secure. So ... guess I'll sell the odds & ends on Facebook Marketplace moving forward. Bye-bye eBay.

looks like phishing to me.

I initially thought it was phishing too then googled it and it does appear that Ebay is reducing the connection with PayPal however this fact still doesn't mean you should lower your guard as could still be a phishing email.

My first thought was phishing too. Then I logged into my eBay account and it was in my eBay message box as well, so it's legit.

Initially, my impression is that eBay is modifying their invoicing system, so to collect their sellers' fees instantly. Their stated benefit to me is that the direct deposit eliminates my PayPal fees for accepting payments. I see no implication that buyers will not be able to use PayPal for payments.

P-A-U-L, the forum discussion you linked to is over a year old, seems to have been speculation about the policy change that we are now seeing.

I could be mistaken, though... I'm researching. Turns out that managing their own payment system has been in the works for nearly five years, and as their operating agreement with PayPal has ended, that's their plan. I'm not concerned at this point. We have until 28 February to update our information (in the U.S.). Other nations will have their plans changed in the near future.

Of note, PayPal required a bank account but no TIN, I suspect that it's a gubmint thing.

Yep. Lot's of threads on the community board at eBay discussing this. PayPal is still a payment option (I think), just not how you can can collect anymore from your sales.

The notice I received shows Feb 1st as the implementation date. Screengrab of the eBay message.

Definitely SPAM...I just listed an item for sale, and PayPal is the method of payment listed.

Definitely NOT spam. Once Feb 1st rolls around you won't be able to have payments from sales sent to your PayPal account. Or Feb 28th?

ETA - Feb 28th date.

I wonder, do you have a regular eBay account or do you have a business set up (don't know if there is such a thing ... just wondering). That is weird the two different dates.

Fair enough...
Since I did not receive the referenced e-mail from eBay, I assumed it was spam - especially since I just sold an lens on eBay, and received payment thru PayPal.

Congrats on the sale. :-)

If I look at doing a listing now I think this option is different now. It's also not selectable, meaning I cannot toggle this option on/off.

I believe its a regular account, that is; I don't have an eBay store. I buy a lot more than I sell, especially now that current events preclude anything but going to work and trips to the local county parks for outside activity.

Still, I'm likely to just accept their terms, and move on with life.
