I remember a song from my childhood...something about a Kookaburra singing...sing kookaburra sing...kookaburra in the old gum tree..something like that

there are many versions out there now .. but I felt this was closest to what we used to sing growing up .. :)

Well that's funny...I was born in the Netherlands (Amsterdam) but learned that song at school as a child in South Africa. My parents emigrated to South Africa when I was 4 years old...hahhahar haharhahahaha |

When I was a kid, the song's lyrics were:

A West coast US guy, an East coast US guy, two folks from South Africa, and a lady from the Netherlands all learned this song about an Australian bird in primary school.
How cool is that???

The title was Australian slang for travelling on foot (waltzing) with one's belongings in a "matilda" (swag) slung over one's back. ... The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker, or "swagman", making a drink of billy tea at a bush camp and capturing a stray jumbuck (sheep) to eat.
