Good news, DPCers! A limited, Beta version of DPCv2 is now available for the community to experiment with, test, report bugs, and make suggestions. We have started a thread on the current, legacy site for that purpose: DPCv3 Beta Bug Reports.

Here are a few notes from Mitalapo & the development team to get you started, and one caveat:

The Beta site may be accessed at https://a.dpchallenge.com

User definitions including passwords and profile pages were ported from the legacy site. If your current password doesn't work in the beta site, please try an older one.

(1) The objectives of the site redesign are:
. To simplify and modernize the site code-base in order to allow the adding of long-sought features
. To better support phones and tablets
. To maintain continuity with the legacy site experience whilst modernizing the aesthetics

(2) The redesign project timeline:
. Developing a reduced functionality site using current technology (completed)
. Running the new code in a beta phase along side the legacy site for a few months
. Adding missing legacy features according to priority
. Launching the new code base and phasing out the legacy site

(3) What is requested from the community:
. Experiment with the new site using all sorts of devices
. Enter and vote on the "test" challenges that are posted
. Provide bug reports
. Provide priorities to guide new features development
. Patience :-)

(4) Regarding synchronization between the legacy and new sites:
. The legacy front-page public content is currently being copied over to the new site on a daily basis.
. The Test challenges are dummy challenges; any results achieved are not "official" and do not port over to the Legacy site/stats.

This is so exciting.

So very well done to everyone that had an input, time, thought, love and design in this.

You all have worked so hard, in what we can only describe as very tough time this year.

Kudos to you all, it might be only Beta, but it will be Alpha!

Alpha is before a Beta version in IT terms.

I miss the keyboard shortcuts for voting. On a phone or tablet, voting with the stars works well, but on a laptop or desktop, I prefer the keyboard numbers to mousing around and clicking on stars. Deal breaker? No. Will I get used to it? Yes.

While it will take some getting used to, I do like the new UI/UX. More in keeping with today’s esthetic. And I like keeping the legacy features. Good work!

That said, I agree with others about using a neutral grey as background while voting.

Porting from the legacy site daily helps in the comparison between new and old. However, the port of the underlying database seems incomplete. Under profile - challenge entries and forum contents. No Portfolio appears to have been migrated although it doesn’t indicate “work in progress.” . No cameras or lenses in preferences. I recognize this is probably not a bug, just not “yet.”

I think you should be very thoughtful about automatically resizing challenge submissions if they are too big. You will be making resizing choices that may not preserve image aspects a photographer might care about. That said, it is a nice service, especially for mobile devices sharing photos in the camera role.

The site remake would be a great opportunity to rethink the 1200 pixel and 700 K limits!

Oh, and did I mention, the site remake would be a great opportunity to rethink the 1200 pixel and 700 K limits!

I'm actually finding 1200 pixels too much since my old computer died. I've always had a problem with portrait mode, but I'm using a laptop at the moment and even photos in landscape mode don't always fit on my monitor - especially on the new site.

A gentle *bump* to remind people to check out the new beta site if they haven't already.

I tried voting on the extended the other one and it wont let me vote

Okay, rephrase that now. I go to challenges, cast vote. it shows me the challenges, but then get this Challenge id 10000054 not found (probably as they were not entered on the other site)

I go to main page and scroll down and click on wildlife begin voting, it just shows the picture. no voting to be had. BUT if I click on the picture then I can vote, if I leave a comment on vote, not sure if it sticks as all I can do if press the arrow.

when i was on the new site, I clicked on primabarbara and saw member of the week. Clicked it and it took me straight back to this site, not the new one.

I also apologize if all this has been said before, I can not remember half the stuff that has already been said, so just going to keep on saying what I find.

I understand the issue although designing for the lowest common denominator is a disservice if the LCD is too low.

How about upping the 700K limit to, say ... 2 Megapixels? Even my iPhone usually takes 3-5 MP images.

Perhaps a new survey / poll is in order? I agree with Gina.

ETA - internet speed is another issue if the allowed file size goes up. Out where I'm at we only have DSL and it's slow (and painful).

I notice that the problem with photos not fitting on my monitor has now been resolved on the new site, so I withdraw my objection to increasing the 1200 pixel limit.

Changing the 700 K limit is certainly going to be a problem for some members though.
