Please post any bugs you find while using the DPCv3 Beta site in this thread, and include as much information about the issue as possible by using the following template:

Summary: What you attempted to do & what the problem is
URL: Page(s) being accessed
Logged in: Yes or No
Browser & OS: Including versions

For example:

Summary: I changed my 'recent forum activity threads' setting to 20 but the homepage still only shows 10 threads.
URL: https://a.dpchallenge.com/profile-preferences
Logged in: Yes
Browser & OS: Chrome 67.0.33 on MacOS 11.0.1

KNOWN ISSUES:

Please don't report about these as we're already aware!

- Voting Summary page doesn't show which entries have comments and which don't
- Portfolio watermarking doesn't affect images in subfolders
- Challenges on the homepage don't expire oldest first
- EXIF parsing of uploaded images isn't reliable/accurate
- Entry titles on the homepage either get cropped or shrink when over a certain length
- Private Messages don't allow multiple newlines in a row

- Voting doesn't loop from last image in list to first when voting is started mid-list
- Adding cameras & lenses to your profile doesn't work
- Many other profile preferences are currently missing
- Forum code (square bracket things mid-text) is no longer supported!

In addition, the current challenge results and forum threads are being cloned from the live site on a nightly basis to help populate the homepage but won't appear as associated with your beta site user profile.

Please also check all previous replies as it's possible that someone else has already reported it! If that's the case just quote/reply to their post and confirm that you're also experiencing the same issue (inc browser & OS if different).

Great to see progress.
Summary: When I voted in the test challenge (boat picture), I attempted to add a comment. The comment box does not have a button to "post" or "submit." I clicked on the score stars, and my comment vanished from the text area with no indication whether the comment was posted or lost. After voting, when I return to review my vote, the comment box remains empty so I am not able to add to or revise my comment (if it is there). Not sure this counts as a bug, but probably is an opportunity for more intuitive interface.

Thanks for all your work.

I noticed it too. I think it is the result of a single image in voting, a rare case in real life I hope.

Similar to today, voting has triple meaning: cast a vote, post a comment, advance to the next image. A previously posted comment should be visible and editable when an image is revisited.

I suspect that with a single image in voting the next image is the same one, and the just posted comment is not yet available for re-editing.

I think this might be a product of the brighter background color, something I was about to comment on. Even on the current forum I've found that the grey used can sometimes make an image that's properly processed in Photoshop (with its Dark Grey background) appear underexposed when submitted here. This will be even a greater issue on the new site. I find that a darker background makes the image easier to see with less eye strain and would like to see the new site go darker than the current, not lighter. Lightroom/Photoshop "Dark Grey" would be perfect.

Also, in the current open for voting challenge the vertical image does not fully display on my 15" MacBook Pro. Currently vertical images resize to fit the screen.

Oh yeah:

1) My comment was duplicated (might be caused by synchronisation with "old" site?).
2) Can't seen which comments were made during the challenge voting and which afterwards.

The new site looks great!

Comment:
Looking at the frontpage using an iPad (IOS 14.2) I see only 4 photos for each challenge, and the challenges are sliding left-right-left etc. to show 5th place. It would be great to see all 5, and have them sliding only in case of a tie (6 photos) like on the laptop screen.
Now, all photos are sliding all the time: 1 step for 5 pictures (left-right-left-right etc.) and 2 steps for 6 pictures (left-left-right-right etc.) so it looks quite nervous all photos moving in phase /out of phase...

Here are a few honest feedback :(

Design aspect:

1. Site is too plain and doesn't really show the photography/challenge point of view
2. Plain site is good for more of the information purpose, like google search or search results but when it comes to show the photographs, it has to look catchy/colorful :)
3. over all layout, I am not sure if the layout is sinking in my brain but it could be just me :(

Processing:
1. For some reason I like the numbering system for voting as I could just type in 5 or 6 or 8 like that and current site takes the voting with the new I have to use mouse to click on star and then again click on next image arrow to move to next image. meaning:

Current Design:
Add comment --> Rate --> system will go on next image (meaning two steps)
New Design:
Rate --> Comment --> Click on next arrow (meaning three steps now)
OR
Comment --> Rate --> Click on next arrow (meaning three steps now)

In here user clicks have increased from 2 to 3. Is that really a big deal no it is not but from user point of view, it added extra effort. This needs to be think about from the user point of view.

2. Not sure if we should remove link from the challenge name it-self. I see we have it removed and kept it at enter this challenge only
3. We have missing information about the challenge type (standard editing/minimal/expert)
4. I believe this has already been raised where an open challenge icon is actually mixing up with the background color and it really needs to look at close to see what it is.

I will continue looking and share my opinion :)

Not a bug report but I really like the clean, crisp display of the new page! Looks great!

How does one get the beta to play with?

Or do you have to be one of the cool kids to get it?

This isn’t a bug fix but I would like to see an easier way to get to past challenges in “Challenge History” . Maybe the addition of a search function in addition to the present system of scrolling through multiple pages to get to the subject.

The comment I posted on the new side didn't show up here so I'll repost it.

I just uploaded an image to the Selective Desaturation "challenge". It worked without any serious problems but didn't pick up all my metadata. It also seemed a bit slower than usual, but that could be due to a poor internet connection.

the lettering could be more bold, I like that it is bigger, but hard to read as it seems to be in skinny type.

Meh on the stars as a vote count, would still like numbers underneath if possible (but that could just be cus I have used the numbers for years and set in my way)

So very very bright, I am blindsided by the white on the side entries photo, so dominant that it sort of blinding and slides into the photo. BUT again that could be my astigmatisms in my eye and glasses but that is glaring and hurts after looking at it for a time

lost all bling on profile page

And bright, I mentioned that.

The arrow button to get to the next picture, is very light and I had to search for it. And most sites have it in the middle of the right of the edge of the photo, it seems like a natural progression versus under the photo

Posted pic, went fine, fast enough, let me enter everything apart from camera and lens. but not sure shutter speed should except Really Fast, ISO was 958623 and Aperture at 5000000.
Also, was not sure if it actually entered it, as it asks for Update details.

As with all things new, everyone has something to say about it. Look at FB, they change so often and everyone cries and whine, but then gets used to it. I think you are doing an amazing job!

P.S. Even FB thorough has a darker background than white, the white is very bright ( I may have mentioned that! ) =P

P.P.S. Can we get some basics emojis =)

Again, YES!! And I've complained about the brightness of the current site.

Here is the winner from the last challenge presented against varying background shades. I would ask that you look at the bottom left of the photo and see how much more of the subtle detail, that the photographer worked so hard to achieve, is lost against the brighter backgrounds.

New Site:

Current Site:

Light Gray:

Medium Gray:

Dark Gray (and Photoshop/Lightroom default):

Black:

It's a disservice to the photographers here to present their images in a way that renders details invisible, particularly when they're likely processing in an environment that allows for their visibility.

I don't care what you do with the site at large, but when presenting a photo for voting it would be great if you could at a minimum use the default gray that Adobe uses.

I have emojis on my phone's keyboard and was able to use one as a comment when I was playing with the new site last night. Can't do it from my laptop, though. Part of the point of the redesign is to let us do more on mobile devices so I'm OK with that.

Regardless of what the site chooses, a user can simply turn the background any colour they want.
I use Midnight Lizard and turn everything, on all sites, to 5% brightness (nearly black). I haven't seen the grey of DPC in years.

The current site was "supposed" to be using a background of the 18% gray which has been the standard viewing environment for photo editors and printers for decades. Displaying photos on a white background will prove very discriminatory.

One idea which was floated a long time ago was to allow the submitter to pick from among several standard backgrounds, though personally I think that voting should be done where all images are displayed in a standard way, preferably on that neutral gray.

But you can't stop someone from changing backgrounds.
I've been using add-ins like Midnight Lizard since add-ins were invented.

If all images were displayed in a standard way, then you'd have to compensate for individual monitor and room settings (brightness, contrast, contrast ratio, ...).

Of course ... the "standard presentation" is intended to do what we can to neutralize those uncontrollable (by us) variables.

The reason we (currently) display a standard gray-scale below each image during voting is so the viewer can at least know how local conditions might be affecting the image.

Above the Comment box while voting, the "Add Site Image" button reads "Add Site Imgage" when you hover over it.

Not a biggie... but you did ask. :D

Thanks for the hard work!

I also vote for a darker background... bolder text... and emojis.
12/05/2020 02:07:05 PM · #23
I think Jake makes a great point about a darker background enhancing a photograph. 1x.com experimented for a year on selecting the best
color to enhance photography. They tried every possible shade of grey and finally decided to stay with black, which is very distinctive.

I would love to see the background color as dark as possible. I too think the text should be bolder.

I appreciate all the hard work that has gone into updating the site. I cannot imagine how time consuming and difficult it must be to
engineer something as complex and massive. When all the bugs have been worked out, it is the presentation, the face of DPC that is going to
matter most. I hope that gets the attention, and the expertise it deserves.

Great work all of you in charge!!! Your efforts and comittment can't be honored enough!

I didn't test all the offered features, but here are my experiences so far:

1. I did upload an entry to a test challnge - worked perfectly!

2. since there is only one pic in voting right now I can't give any feedback on how to get to the next photo. I'd love to see it change directly after choosing a star (or a number - or whatsoever)

3. Text is ok for me, as with the background maybe grey is indeed a choice to think of. Takes away from the crispness from the fresh site though.

4. As JulietNN mentioned before - all the bling is gone as well as the fav's (both photographers and pictures) or at least I didn't find it. You are probably planning moving all that to the new site later, I suppose

5. GolferDDS suggested a search function for challenge history - I'd love that too

6. When going on the profile it shows that I have two pictures with minus 1 comment. How is that possible? Did someone post a comment and delete it afterwards?

7. I know there is a discrepancy on showing personal data and useful information. At the profile page so far there has been an input box for location. Some users put in their actual state or country, some a made up location. But being from a very different time zone I always found it useful to see when to expect f.e. an answer from somebody. But this is only a very personal thing and I can live without it, no doubt.

8. I also gave a comment quoting someone, did work fine. But there is no button any more for inserting a user name, right?

9. And yes, a few emojis would be nice although I can see the apprehension of people getting lazy and instead of giving a proper comment just pressing a like button. I'm torn...butwhatever you decide will be ok for me.

I'm logged in,
working on a windows PC and
using Microsoft Egde as a browser (sorry I'm an absolute dummie concerning technical details..)

What about dumb little stuff?

My birthday's wrong.

Although......the actual date isn't called out on the old site.

Did a test entry-good

Voted-good

Haven't figured out how to trim a forum post that I only want to respond to one of several points.

When I hit quote, I don't seem to be able to remove text.
