Why is it that in many recently finished challenges that at least one of the top ten images has been removed? It seems to happen quite frequently now and yet when I look through challenge archives for ideas I don't notice it nearly as much. It's not from disqualified images, as those are moved to the end of the list, so it's got to be something else. Any ideas why this is happening much more frequently than it used to?

Ties.

To expand on what Barry said, the reason we see it more now than in the past is because we are seeing lower activity and way fewer votes, so ties are statistically more likely now. Anyway, the pattern is like this: 1,2,3,3,(blank),5,6,7,7,7,(blank),(blank),10.... in the case of a tie for 3rd and a 3-way tie for 7th.

If activity is at a lower participation rate, then what is the logic for discouraging Photographers who went out of their way to submit an image? If there's a tie, then mark it as a tie. Doesn't that make more inclusionary vs exclusionary sense?

As an example, in View From Above VII, there are two images that placed 10th. As such there is no "11th" place image so the 11th place image is represented by "This image has been removed." i.e. No one is getting excluded. Maybe that could be represented in a better way but for now that's what happens.

Looks like the the comment was a programming shortcut that was supposed to designate true instances of "This image has been removed"(withdrawn image, removed for community standard violation, deleted for other reason), but now shows up most often (incorrectly) when identical scores occur.

Perhaps the revised website could implement a bit of program change to handle ties with "Empty position due to identical scores" or something similar.

Bob gets it!! I program for a living and it's funny to me how often end users think mistakes are deliberate and then rationalize it in their minds, coming up with fantasy reasons why someone might think it's a good idea. Human nature, I guess.

Well, I don’t think it is ties. In the “Textures and Materials II” challenge I ended up 9th ex aequo along with Drake with exactly the same score and both images are still there, and both are correctly listed as “9th”.

So it has to be something else and I am also curious what it could be.

Consider it a placeholder. No biggee.

Look again: you have 9th, Drake has 9th, then because there is no 10th there is the placeholder, and the next image is 11th.

Thanks Bear_Music, I see what you mean, on page 2 with 18,18 with the same points, 19 as a placeholder “image removed” and then 20th.

On page 1 the 10th place “image removed” is not showing apparently because its the last one on the page so I didn’t see it happen there. Hence my remark.
