Here's another interesting question to help us know our fellow DPC people a little bit better:

- How long have you been doing photography and how did you get into it?

I used to take approximately two rolls of film with my point and shoot 35mm camera per year ... you know you don't shoot much when you have Christmas of 1999 and 2000 all on one roll of film. lol

I bought a HP315 2 megapixel camera in April of 2002, and got hooked. I bought a Canon Powershot G2 in July 2002 and that's when my love of photography really took off.

I've been having fun ever since.

My father-in-law got me started on film cameras in 1999. I had a point-and-click before that and took vacation snapshots. Took evening classes, but really never got totally hooked. Then my father-in-law and my brother both bought digital cameras ... then I just had to keep up with them and buy one, too. That was in early 2001. Soon after I found DPC and got hooked, got them and a bunch of other family/friends involved and have taken a huge amount of photos since then. Nowadays, I don't take enough snapshots for the family album anymore. LOL. How things change ...

About 14 months. Got a camera for the first time in December 2001 and been trying to take a good picture ever since. Maybe one day....

I have had a camera of some sort for quite a while. I started taking it seriously in march of 2002, so I have been at it for a little less than a year...

I was seriously into SLR photography between about 1976 and about 1983. I have a fabulous collection of prints from that time, but no negs. I can't remember why it tailed off; I guess I just used my time on other interests.

Two summers ago, when my wife and I were about to go on vacation, I grabbed without much thought a cheap-end point-and-shoot digital camera. we had so much fun with it, and I seemed to recapture some of the "eye" that I used to have, and I played with shooting throughout that fall and winter. When we were about to go on vacation last year, a few weeks after I discovered DPC, I realised the limitations of the cheapie and bought my Fuji.

I've had a point and shoot since I was a teenager. I have many family photo albums and a big box of photos I haven't put into albums yet (maybe some day?).

I never considered photography as a hobby until I bought my first digital camera in July 2002. I don't know what happened then - I went outside and snapped a few shots of flowers a couple of days after I bought it and got hooked on macro. One of the early digital photos is Tiger Lilies. That photo, and dpchallenge which I discovered at the same time have completely changed my life. I am hopelessly addicted to both this site and photography, but like franziska, rarely take photos for the family album anymore.

Have only been at it since October of 2002. Glad I found DPC, wouldn't have taken near the interesting shots that I have if I didn't.

I was always the photo taker for the family on vacation, birthdays and holidays using a 35SLR..very few photos of me in all of this. Got my digital a year ago and after joining DPC I am taking many more shots with thoughts of getting the best shot.

I became interested in photography while still in the womb, but my mother complained of pain when I tried experimenting with photography in there. :)

I have pictures I took with a little camera in grade school. It was the kind that you had to buy individual flash bulbs for -- the bulb would rotate until you fired each of the four flashes.

My whole family has always been into photography, so I grew up with a darkroom in the house. I'm hoping my daughter will continue the love of the hobby when she gets a little older.

I've been into digital photography since sept. 2000. bought a sony mavica FD95 to capture budapest (my wife's native country and where all of her relatives are). being a mid 20 age, all my friends were getting married. so vacations and weddings were my most photographed subjects. my wedding pictures got popular (some of my bride friends liked my pictures better than the professionals). so i decided to pursue further. got a small portfolio together and i have worked with 4 wedding pro's (assisting and shooting). i currently work with 2 wedding photographers to learn more and get to a point where i can go on my own. i have done 2 full ones on my own.

i have also been working for the local newspapers for the past 7 months. a few assignments per month. mostly sports!

all this and I've never had a photo class in my life. i've attended a few camera club meetings last year, but that died out after a move. i look forward to take a class in NYC at the college my wife teaches (a nice perk for spouses, its free!!).

I got a Kodak Advantix camera for graduation from high school in '96. I didn't use it too much. I always liked setting up shots, but I didn't really know any of the guidelines. Then in August my wife got a new car. And she said if she got the new car, I could put a stereo system in mine. I thought about it, but thought what would that benefit me in the end. So I went and got a digital camera instead (a Pentax 430RS) I kept that for a week and then returned it becuase I didn't quite like the features and quality. I got a G2 instead which I loved. Then in December this year I got my D100. All my photography skills have taken off since August. I found this site and entered my first challenge (the pencil challenge) and got a 3.8 (180/185) I figured that it was just a place to build and learn off of, and I've moved up from there. This past week has been great photographly for me, my wife told me of a connection last night that I may get a job working with them, just have to put together a port for them.

Years ago, when I was 4 years old, I accidentally turned on the light in my father's darkroom while he was printing a picture ... got a spanking for that trick! BUT, wanting to find out more about why I had been punished, I started learning from him and we processed many rolls of B&W film and printed thousands of pictures. It served to get me hooked on this hobby.

In high school, I started working with some color developing and printing in a home darkroom I had built. Working with color at home was unusual at that time since this was in the early 1960's. During this time, I worked with cameras as large as an 8X10 view camera using the swings & tilts all the way down to a Minox subminiature camera.

A few years later, I worked (for 3 years) for a color lab & really learned a great deal more about the technical side of photography. I also finally figured out that I'd never get rich --- maybe not even make a decent living --- if I continued in THAT career path so I moved on to other, more lucrative, opportunities. I still took many, many pictures through the years but didn't concentrate on it very much either creatively or technically.

Now I have a little more time and money to devote to this hobby. Going digital has cut the film and developing costs dramatically (basically to $0.00) ... AND has given back the "darkroom" control I used to enjoy so much.

DPC seems to be an ideal vehicle to help keep me going and growing. I've seen some terrific work here. I have, in the past, been a member of a camera club but that required devoting a particular night to their weekly meetings and entering most, if not all, of their competitions. With DPC, I can enter a challenge ... or not ... without having anyone rag on me about not meeting the "requirements of the club". And, I can "attend the meeting" at 3 AM if I want to!

Thanks DPC!

I have been shooting almost everyday for the past 4 years due to a life-changing event. I was told I had an ovarian tumor that might be cancerous. I needed something to take my mind off of surgery and my camera did just that (a month is a long time to wait when cancer is an issue). So I focused on portraits of my children, friends and family members while ill and in recovery. My camera became my best friend and still is. Thank you dpchallenge for keeping my passion alive!

i received a Pentax K1000 as a high school graduation present...um...er...(eeek!) 25 years ago. I have been a voracious photographer since then. Only had my digital camera for a couple of years. It's just a 1.3 mp but i'm saving my pennies for a new one. :)

Ive been taking snapshots since I was a little kid. I took 2 years of photography in hight school where my passion really took off. From there I joined the Navy and while in the Persian Gulf bought my Pentax 35mm SLR. Took all the pictures for our ships cruise book (kinda like a year book). Got my first digital in December 2001 and had to upgrade to my 707 in July last year. DPC keeps my passion strong and I'm starting school at Kendall College of Art and Design in Michigan in the fall for photography.

At every family gathering and event, I have been the one to take pictures. My late Dad always photographed lots of sporting events. When he passed away I inherited his equipment, and shot weekly, mostly nature.
A few years ago, I started selling stuff on eBay, and bought a Fuji camera for that. I quickly realized the potential and became hooked! I won a new computer and some other equipment with a picture I took with that simple camera, and started to seek out a newer and better camera. I got my Kodak DC4800 3.1 MP about 20 months ago, and haven't really used much film since.
I take my camera everywhere I go. It's just small enough to fit in my purse.

I have been taking pictures since I can remember. I used to try and get my hands on my Mom's camera at family gatherings to take a few shots. Most of them were out of focus and thumbshots. When I was about 9 I got a camera it was one of those 110 film point and shoot kinds. I liked it but realized that my lack and my parents lack of money prevented me from doing a lot with photography. In high school I took up videography and took television production classes. When I joined the military I realized I could afford buying and processing film. I bought a SLR two years ago and took more than 100 rolls in a year experimenting with the camera. Only a quarter of those pictures were good. Taking decent pictures was always a goal of mine but paying for processing was killing my budget so I bought my D30. The camera has paid for itself. Thank goodness for digital.

My dad got me interested in photography as a kid, since he was an amateur photographer as a hoby for a while. I took classes in highschool for my fine art credits, then some studio courses as a last resort when I had to drop my research seminar class (I enjoyed the class, but I spent too much time goofing off since it was a studio class, and me and my best friend were in it). I got a digital camera for christmas, since I'd always been frustrated by the limitations of not having a dark room, and being restricted by 24hr photo places. Took a course in my first semester of college, which sparked a new love for photography. Borrowed some books, searched the web for advice on how to improve. Found this place, became a lot more serious. That's pretty much it for now.

All in all, about 8 years, maybe.
