But the Sony a7s is 12 mp and it’s a great camera so I think it would be fine until I can get some good rf glass. Also do you think it would make more sense to buy a tampon or sigma rf lens or just save up for the canon ones?

After doing some research I think I will make the switch to Sony but it'll be tough because I'm only 13 so I don't have a steady source of income.

That's not surprising ;)

A question - what would you really like to buy if you had enough money?

For me, if I had unlimited money I would buy the a7r IV. But the most reasonable would be the a7 III. What I really want from sony is for them to expand their lenses.

A very good choice, I like it better than A7 RII, and in low light even A7 RIII. I understand that you might get a Christmas present that could be A7 III but your problem will be lack of lenses. Not sure which is the best value for money E lens that could be bought from selling your Canon gear.

And then wait for your birthday for a better lens ;)

PS I hope your parents aren't reading this :)

Let's just say my mom might not be the happiest with her money situation after Christmas.

And do you think the lens or the camera comes first.

And Margaret I see you have a killer setup with cameras and lenses.

From my experience it was the lens but then I got a bit too much GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and upgraded my Canon camera to full frame, and then sold all Canon gear and moved to Sony. As was said before in the thread, good lenses keep the value. My first L lens was Canon 70-200 f4 and I used it on 550D body! It was an amazing jump in quality from Tamron zoom lens.

I am very happy with my current setup and I am not planning to buy any more lenses, I might upgrade my A7 III to A7 IV when it comes out but I am not bothered about upgrading A7R III. It is a bit of an overkill for most amateurs like me.

The gear is actually my dad's so I'll have to ask him if he feels any connection to it. And if you have seen all my lenses (besides the 70-200 which is broken) I don't think it will sell for much.

So being realistic you might be better off staying with Canon for now and focus on learning photography. Getting good results with average setup will teach you more and you will know soon what you need to get first - good lens or FF camera :) DP Challenge is a very good place to learn, there are a lot of members who will help you.

Ya that's probably true but eventually (maybe in a year or a bit less) I'll upgrade

So what sony camera would you recommend and what lens is your favorite.

A7 III with 24-105 as it is the most versatile

I mainly do landscape so do you think I should get the a7r ii or the a7r iii instead of the a7 iii.

I honestly cannot see a difference. Sometimes I crop a lot and then the resolution could matter but I did not really notice. I did some wild crops on A7 III and they worked very well.

But the camera I use the most these days is Sony RX100 VI, fixed lens and relatively basic compared with FF and fancy lenses but I can take it everywhere and that's all that matters.

ok

So I will get the a7 iii and the 24-105 f/4 and thanks Margaret

But on Adorama they have a good deal on the a7r ii for 500 dollars of and with the 28-70 its only 2000

but in the long run, I think that the a7 iii would be better, but just the body of the a7 iii is the same price as the a7r ii with a lens

I'd go for the a7iii for the battery life alone. I had the a6500 which I believe is the same battery. I had to carry 6 batteries around with me for a day of intensive shooting. with my a7iii, I can usually live with 1, two at the most.

But there are other reasons, as well. But the battery life sucks on earlier models.
