Basic problem that I started with was that usually we use high speed photography during day time like bright sunny day. Night time is usually we do long exposure to get some smooth shots. For this challenge I was thinking about what if I do high speed in night time? meaning I go to max possible shutter speed of the camera and take the shot, what would I get if I go with that?
To achieve that, I use a tennis ball dipped in the water bucket, I placed GoDox V1 flash with HSS mode on over a wireless trigger connected to my sony A7Rii + 35mm lens at 1.4 (widest aperture wanted to go to make sure I can achieve 1/8000 shutter speed). I did a few tries with the tennis ball to make sure I can go up to that shutter speed and then I tried three times with tennis ball and one of the image is what I uploaded to DPC :)
Here is the setup of the shot and one of the image in this collage shows the EXIF detail.

An amazing image and really appreciate your ‘How To’. I’ll need to master my camera a bit more before I try something like this but it’s gives me the inspiration to get on with it!

 GolferDDS,  Lydia to show you what and how, I created a small video just now to show you how. In here you can see that first I placed my camera and light then I pre-focus tennis ball then if you notice, I took a step or two back and then I spin the ball such that the ball rotation remains in the camera frame and at that time the camera shutter was triggered. Since the shutter speed was 1/8000 then everything in the frame get's freeze. I hope this helps :)
to show you I created this video in day time but the actual shot is night time :)

| Your timing is amazing! I was thinking it could be done by drilling a whole in the ball, putting a stick in the hole. You could use a drill attached to the stick behind a black curtain, wet the ball and turn on the drill to cause the ball to spin and radiate the water from a fixed position. That is what I imagined when I saw your picture. Fun shot! |

This sounds like it would also work with sparklers, LEDs, flaming steel wool ... |

In this image, the right most bottom one, I use sparkler with the drill machine and rotate it :)

The shot is AMAZING, the set up .... well, lets just say beyond my abilities. Throwing a ball for the dogs is challenging enough that it doesn't land: on the roof, in the tree, hit myself on the head, hit the dog, hit the car, throw it onto the road (which is nowhere in my throw line of course) .... getting it to spin in front of the camera is definitely NOT going to happen :-)))
However, just on the speedlight, can you pls explain how this works? I thought there is the "max synch speed", which in my camera is 250. How can you get around that? So sorry if this sounds like a really stupid question, but I would like to learn :-). |

Correct, out of box flash sync speed is either 1/128 or 1/256. Now next part depends on the flash that you buy and whether it has support for HSS or not. e.g. in this image you can see that this is "GoDox V1", I am showing that when a flash is enabled to have high speed sync what icon you would see on the flash and most of the flash the other button where I am saying click here, enables/disables the high speed sync. To do this, you dont have to have wireless trigger but you can keep the flash over the camera, enable the HSS and you can go high speed. 90% of the time people use high speed sync photography in day/sunny modeling photoshoot as they would like to overcome sun's power with the artificial power and maintain the bokeh.

Oh Girish, thank you SO much. This is so very helpful. I have been struggling with getting my dog action shots really sharp (the long hair of the dogs always seem to be OOF (at 250 not really surprising!), even if the eyes and nose for example are sharp). I think this is going to solve my problem. I googled HSS for dog photography and see that a lot of info comes up from photographers I "know", but never seen those specific interviews.
Both my camera and my Canon 430EX II can do the HSS. Thank you, thank you, thank you! |
