"Compress several layers of distance within a scene into a relatively "flat" view (with a seemingly shrunken distance between the layers) by your choice of perspective, cropping, and/or composition."
hmmm... does anyone have any examples of this that might help me understand this better?

What I think you "need" (as I understand it) is a scene that has considerable actual depth, especially one in which the viewer KNOWS the depth is there and a telephoto lens with the primary focus on something near you.

Here are a number of photographs assembled to illustrate various aspects of depth of field. Scroll down to "Compression"
For me the laundry with the village behind it is an excellent example of what I'm trying to say. I KNOW the houses behind the laundry are built up a hill so I know they can't be right behind it - certainly all of them can't be!. I KNOW the ones at the top are physically farther away than the ones at the bottom as the road must wind up the side of a hill getting farther away as it does so. But when I look at the scene, it looks as if all the buildings are pretty much smack dab behind the laundry and, indeed, right on top of one another.
You can find quite a number of "tutorials" or explanations with samples . . . you'll see that if the photographer shoots exactly the same scene with 35mm, 70mm, 200mm, 400mm the compression becomes increasingly obvious.

Actually, the most obvious example of perspective compression would be extreme telephoto shots that make far objects visually the same size as similar near objects; like, the opposite of wide-angle, which gives perspective extension/distortion. But the term IS open to interpretation and entrants should do whatever floats their boat :-)

What you are referring to here is one extreme of "Forced" Perspective.

It's a glitch.
Somehow, in spite of that message my entry has gone in, but the details didn't stick. I managed to add location, and even change the date via my portfolio. However I can't put in my title. |

OK. It accepted the submission, but it won’t allow me to update with a title and details. A sign keeps popping up that says it’s outside the entry dates. |

So, have a subject, walk a distance away from subject and then zoom in a bit, and all the stuff behind the subject is closer looking and blurryish but you recognize what it is.
Is that about right?

That's one aspect of it yeah, though the blurry part is optional.
