My reasons are situationally subjective and grateful.

June 3rd, I wrecked my motorcycle. Badly. I shattered my right wrist, broke my left collarbone, and seven ribs on my left side.

It was my own fault, stupid on a couple of levels, and that's all i'm gonna say on the subject.

I'm alive, and I have to keep reminding myself that's a good thing. But I'm one of those people who does everything himself, so I feel utterly useless and that I'm a huge burden.

I don't even know when the surgery to remove the pins and plates will be.

I cannot even try to pick up my camera, much less operate it.

So....enough whining.

What the Archival challenges have enabled me to do is to stay connected to my work. They have allowed me to participate. And that's my motivation for this thread.

For the guy who wrecked his bike, the woman who pulled her camera off the counter to have it hit the hard floor and break, for the person whose life changed in an instant outside their control that makes it that they can't shoot.....this is a gift.

It may not seem like a lot, but when life sometimes bites you in the ass, it's a glimmer of hope and joy.

OOooiiii Jeb! Dang. Glad you survived the wreck. Sorry to hear about this. Hope you get better soon, and that you have some help around the house.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I hope you will have a full recovery in time and be able to get shooting again.

I think the point you make re participating while not being able to go out and shoot for the challenges, is quite significant. These Archival challenges have been introduced on a weekly base due to the outbreak of the Corona virus, but maybe DPC should consider to keep it that way in order to keep connected with members of the community that have issues preventing them from going out and shoot for the challenges. And I guess it's not a bad thing to do, if we have a look at the number of people that participate. I know DPC originally was not meaning to have this kind of challenges, but moving forward and find a nice balance between 'fresh' challenges and archivals might be the right thing to do.

Holy Cats Jeb! That is terrible news. Here's wishing you an uneventful recovery.
As an avid motorcyclist myself, and someone who has lost fellow riders to accidents, this hits close to home.

Good wishes for a speedy recovery, Jeb. You'll get through this. I totally understand your frustration. I'm a do it myself person as well and my wife says I make a very bad patient. Fortunately, my latest knee injury isn't as bad as the last one and I am riding my bike about 2 months later. Still enjoyed an ambulance ride at 1AM and a surgery, however.

I wouldn't object to having an archival once or twice a month. I am enjoying finding gems that I never got around to before getting onto pics from the next session.

Take care, Jeb. Hopefully, you will be out shooting non-archival challenges before you know it.

Speedy recovery Jeb!
Great exercise in patience though. Like always, something good will spring from this unhappy thing.

Whoa Dang, Jeb!

I'm so sorry that you're going through this.

I'm happy Archival makes you able to compete while you heal!

I hope that's very quickly.

Whoa, so sorry to hear Jeb! Take care of yourself and stay save, your immune system needs to work overtime to heal your injuries so you don’t need to get virus.

Dang it Jeb, there seems to be another epidemic going on; in the past week my drummer's wife fell and broke her arm, and one of my patients fell off a ladder and broke her leg.

Hope you heal quickly and have adequate pain medication!

Wishing you a very speedy recovery! It’s great that archival gives you a chance to participate and enjoy while you’re healing.

Archival challenges are great. I'm no longer a member (by choice) and the open challenges are just enough to enter an occasional photo from my cache when I'm not embroiled in Facebook. Stay safe and heal fast!

all the best for a speedy recovery Jeb .. sounds like you have been going thru the wringer ..
its crazy how our lives can totally change from one moment to the next .. my heart goes out to you .. xx

so its great that dpc is including the archival challenges for those of us who cant get out and about ..
hopefully they continue when the covid crisis goes away .. thats me thinking positively ..

i dont get out much myself because i have a dog that gets car sick and of course covid .. pretty much stuck at home ..
trying to remedy the dog situation tho ..

also i have some ongoing health problems that impact on my quality of life .. so thats why i keep entering photos that i take around my home .. and all the photos of toddy .. thats about all i have right now .. and when i look back at photos i've taken in the past i'm not impressed .. so i dont do many archival challenges ..

so many of us have stuff going on .. i for one am extremely grateful to dpc .. its a place where i like to hang out .. and be inspired by other ppl who love photography ..

thanks for that .. i'd feel a bit lost without dpc .. :)

Holy crap, Jeb!

A word of advise: get over the feeling like a burden stuff. There's nothing more irritating than that. It's much better to deal with a person who asks for help when the need it and are thankful when they get it.

Think about it: which would you prefer if the shoe was on the other foot?

Just some loving advice from someone's who's been there (and still needs to learn to take her own advice!)

Heal quickly, my friend!

Yikes Jeb, Hoping for a full recovery soon, and I agree with your sentiments on archival challenges, I look forward to them more than the other challenges these days.

So sorry, Jeb - what a situation! Best wishes for a full and rapid recovery.

I love having the weekly archive challenge, too. Seems to me we used to have only two new challenges per week . . . now it's three. I may be wrong. But as far as I'm concerned, nothing is lost and much is gained if one of those weekly challenges is archival.

It's been three for a long time, two member-only and one open (plus the two FSs) ...

I'll second the Holy Crap Jeb! Never like to read about events like yours. Take it easy and heal quickly, and let those that want to help, help. We all need help extra help from time to time, Its a karma thing really, you help others in need, and they in turn will help you when your needs are there.

I favor the archive challenges too. It is very refreshing to look back and see what can be processed differently now than when the image was taken, it helps the eye to see better too. Its amazing what a simple crop can do if you look close enough. I think its really helping DPC too. It great to see the number of entires go up!

OUCH!

That's awful, Jeb, | hope you will slow down in future! ;) I also think that Archivals are great and having them just once a week still allows those who can go out, to keep on shooting.

Get well quickly while digging those archives!

That's really awful, Jeb. This is one of those crap deals where patience is required however, where patience is the one thing that one doesn't have.
Here's sending you ((Hugs)) from Germany and I wish you a full and rapid recovery.
Very best get well soon wishes,
Irene
