Post your outtakes from the Car/Automobile III (ARCHIVAL) challenge here.

Happy with my score but just wondering whether I should have corrected for exposure and white balance (and saturation for the red). It is more correct but also takes some of the mood away of a late afternoon with more snow coming. Here is original versus challenge image.

I like the red saturation of your edited version, but by changing the exposure/WB you lost not only some of the mood but also the details in the snow and even more in the sky. I think I would have gone for a mixture of the two and try to get a (not too extreme) HDR look.

My entry:

Yo_Spiff had this to say:
"Nice, though for me this treatment might have worked better with something a bit more retro. Personal preference is all that is. I do like the wideangle perspective. That work nicely for this."

To be honest, this was something that worried me when I entered, but I never think they photos look good in colour. Here's the colour version:

And a couple of other outtakes which were shot in the last 15 months:

@GinaRothfels I like the processing of your entry it brings out the reflection in the hood well, which is something I particularly like in the the entry. I agree the wide-angle perspective works well here. I think you made a good choice.

@GinaRothfels I prefer the red version, although that also draws even more attention to the van in the back. A portrait mode shot from a standpoint a bit more to the left could have moved the van out of view maybe?

I prefer the processed version because it de-emphasizes the background. Maybe a slight blur applied to the background (making DOF appear shallower) would do so even more, but might be hard to make look realistic.

I never use blur to change DOF in post. I'm sure I'd just ruin a photo if I tried. The closest I've come to that is using vignetting.

Well, now you have a suitable image to practice on stress-free since it won't be subject to the wrath of the voters.

I'd try applying it through a gradient mask to help make it a more subtle effect. I'm not saying adding blur would work well, only that it might and could be fun to try ... :-)

Entry...

Alternative..

I wouldn't expect either to do well here. I don't do typical car photography. Just sharing.

Rachel, based on your comment in the photographers notes on your entry "it's fun and it brings back good memories. Isn't that the point?" I'm not sure that the outtake would be an option (unless it's a memory shot also?).

As for the images; I would have given your outtake at least 2 points higher than your entry. I like the overall feel of it better, it fills the frame, and it seems a more intimate take on the subject.

My two cents. :-P

I definitely prefer your alternative, more atmosphere, more elements showing the meticulous attention and care given to the car.

I think you should have tweaked the white balance only a tiny bit and only changed the saturation of the red colours of the car. Then you would have kept the mood of the late afternoon but with the emphasis on the car.

Seems I'm never going to please everyone. I've had four comments related to the two different ways I processed my entry. Two preferred the one I entered and two preferred the colour version.

The only one you have to please is yourself.

I suppose that's true, but after 18 years at DPC, I'd like to figure out how to win a ribbon just once.

Based on comments received, thanks to Kroburg and Janja, I amde the in-between version.
