Luminar seems to be getting some traction in the marketplace, more folks are experimenting with it and it has some unique features. One of these features is the ability to automatically combine features from more than one source image. Luminar has some built-in images that can be used as source images. We wanted to clarify the legality of this technique.
Use of this feature in Luminar is completely legal in Extended Editing, if and only if all the source images are legal for the challenge. This means that we can't allow use of the built-in images, since they were not shot by the person submitting to the challenge. But if you are using all images that you personally shot, and within challenge dates, then go for it!

I haven't heard of Luminar before, but your post seems to be consistent with what I'd expect.

Carry on... :D

I've been really impressed with the sky replacement tool in Luminar 4, especially how it adjusts the rest of the picture.

I have been using it and so far loving it!

This image was done in Luminar and it took may be 10 mins to achieve this!

This one a few seconds video I created for one of the feature to show the details

Let me know if you want to buy, I can get a $10 discount code :D

I’d rather use Luminar 3, gives me much more filters that I can control. Luminar 4 is all about taking control over me. So I only use it for the sky replacement.

I first heard of Luminar about 2 weeks ago and I'd love to try it. Trouble is I need a new computer first and I'm struggling to find the right thing without leaving the house.

Luminar 3 was free for one day because of some deal with the version 4. I have been using version 4, I have my own looks (Lightroom world call it as Presets). I have used layers and all other features and it does have many thing under single roof.

There is a new Luminar, Luminar AI. I think it does move some pixel’s around. Is this software legal for challenges with Standard Editing?

Yes, in a word.
There are no tools that are illegal, only uses of them. The way the tool is used must comply with the applicable ruleset, that's all that's required.

Yeah, no kidding. I'd say the rules are pretty loose on tools nowadays - just look at some of the "adjustments" made in Goofy Face and that ran under the 'Standard' ruleset. :-O

Luminar is da BOMB!

That being said, PS now also has sky replacement abilities, which are apparently very good, but haven't tried.

Luminar 4 had a layers capability which didn't show up in the latest AI version. Apparently that capability will be added in the 2021 updated version

The advantage of the layers in 4 was the ability to create reflections in still water, to make things even more realistic.

Also, for those contemplating trying it, it is very easy to use your own images in it.

I don't have Luminar but I've experimented a bit with sky replacement in PS. Has anyone compared the two?
12/19/2020 08:18:31 AM · #14
I have both and I would say Luminar came out with that idea/concept first and Adobe just borrowed or copied over it. one time I did create a video of Luminar doing thatand you can see it here on twitter. This was last year so you can see even at that time Luminar was well in advanced.

Thanks.

From what I can see it looks pretty similar. I guess what I was really wondering was which does a better job with masking things one wants to keep. My guess is that both are going to need some manual adjustment though, and that's not something I'm very good at.

I haven't tried PS for this, but Luminary is exceptionally easy. A couple of sliders, and for trickier jobs it has a brush function.

Yup and brush function is also easy to follow.

I did get Luninar AI and I do have photoshop. I’ve played a little bit with the sky replacement in the Luminar AI. I have to say that it is much easier to do in Luminar AI, but I don’t think it works quite as well as photoshop for a complex sky - ground interface. Also my pics are now 45 megapixels (early Christmas present) and I don’t think the skies in their catalog are near that resolution so it looks a little strange. I would say for a simple medium resolution photo the Luminar AI should be fine. That being said, it is a fun program to play with. Some cool effects. I’m finding it a little unstable with raw files and when I use it as a plugin on photoshop. What I e been doing is converting my raw files to tiff and then opening them in Luminar AI. A bit of a pain. Luminar AI is fun, but photoshop is irreplaceable.

Thanks everyone. Having recently upgraded from PS CS5 and bought a new camera, I don't think I'll be spending money on Luminar right now.

You can use any photo - your own, of any resolution - in Luminar. You are not limited to their library.

After reading this, and since I'm off this week, I decided to download the 7 day free trial and see how it works. I'm not overly impressed with the editor and have found the sliders to be far more wide-ranging than I would want. In other words, when you have a scale of +/-100 and the results are largely unusable after you hit 30 then I'd rather have 30 be where 100 is and allow for more nuanced adjustments.

That said, I tried a sky replacement in both Luminar and Photoshop and I found them to both work really well, but I like the fact that in Luminar you can apply the blur with the tool instead of afterward in Photoshop. I don't do a lot of sky replacements, mainly because they're inadmissible here except for expert editing, as well as not allowed in most club competitions and contests (Nature has so many more restrictions than anything else, and rightly so), but it's nice to be able to take a photo with a plain sky and make it pop a bit more.

For those who have used both Luminar 3 & 4, how much "better" is 4? When I re-upped a membership on another site the offer included "A Free Copy of Luminar" and I thought I lucked out, but it turns out it was Luminar 3. I don't want to install and activate it if I'm going to go with 4 (I have a friend who I'd give 3 to), so I'm just looking for experiences.

I have an unused license of Luminar 4 if somebody wants it, just send a message.

I've been using Luminar 4 for about a year now, after being unhappy with Corel Aftershot (It could not read the .DNG files from my drone). I also plunked down for the upcoming Luminar Neo since it was only $35 USD, but I skipped AI.

My only minor complaint is that it does not integrate with my file manager, so I cannot move files by dragging and dropping from Luminar's library view to another folder. (I prefer to organize my images using my PC's own file system)

Shadow and Highlight recovery work quite nicely compared to other software I've used, including the RAW software from Canon and Olympus.

There are some things I still prefer to do in Corel Paintshop Pro, because they either work better or I simply know how to use those tools more easily. But I have far less editing to do in PSP now.

Humble Bundle currently has a software bundle that includes Luminar AI, Aurora HDR, Luminar 4, and some plugins for $25.
