Went back to the early days where I was scoring in the 6/8 range, now I'm lucky to be in the 4 low 5s

Have times and tastes changed, or am I simply loosing the plot ..
I admit I mainly photograph for my own pleasure and a Challenge entry is a bonus.
other times I will shoot with challenges in mind .and I enter most challenges...

I do think overall, voting has gotten harsher. Hard to really know for sure because it is hard to be objective about one's own work. I keep an eye on my average cast to ensure I am being fair. As long as my vote cast is typically in the 6.0 to 6.5 range I don't think I am growing too harsh.

It truly has changed over the years. In the past, it was not uncommon to have 200+ votes, and these days it is under 100.

Personally, I want to see something different.
If you're going to show me what I expect, it better be interspectacular, fantabulous, blow my socks off.

And many others will low vote when they don't see what they expect. This is just one factor contributing to why on a scale of 1-10, just hitting an average of 6 is a strong entry.

But I don't participate here for easy ego strokes.

For sure! This place is not for the faint of heart. In my time here I've developed a rather thick skin and not much irritates me anymore.

Very true. Site is called "challenge" but we love photography and this site or else we can go for just a "love" mark at any other sites that do not require a topic, a discipline or a comment

Yes the voting scale has moved surreptitiously from 8 to -2 (-2 called still 1)

People, just vote without revenge if your image was marked low, vote even if you have a horse in the race or not and comment in a truthful, articulate and as possible professional way.

It's the dark side of democracy, as I call it.

There is no perfect system as there is no heaven on earth.
Only glimpses of it. And that's why it feels bad.

The quality of work will deteriorate if a place becomes too vicious and unfair,
whether those who vote are voting too high or too low, for whatever reason.
People just stop caring enough about their own work,
and even caring less about others' as it becomes meaningless to them,
in an environment like that.
So we have to be careful.

A good litmus test for me when voting, is the four criteria:
Creative vs Technical and Theme Adherence Vs Does it Move me.
All four need to be present.
Also, if I take much pleasure in voting really low or really high,
I immediately step back.
I remind myself: it is not about me.
It is about the photo.

With all that said, I have gone back and regretted my high or low vote at times.
Especially the low.

On the flip side, in a tough environment, the stimulation becomes high enough where things get actually done!
For creatives that is almost their main problem at times - getting things done.
It then can spill over into other good things, where things get started and done.
I know since it happened to me!

Also, every once in a while, we stumble upon a spectacularly inspirational photo
and if it is from a person we know it is that much better and effective for our lives. If they can do it, so can I.

As long as the place does not become too negative or false,
it is definitely 'what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger' in here for me.

Also things change. They go up and they go down.
The fact that DPC is still here after all these years, attests to its strength and quality
of the before mentioned criteria: Creative, Technical, Theme adherence and Does it Move Me balance.

Vote as if it were your picture.
Comment as if you were talking to your mother.
Don't lie to her, she knows already, but don't be mean.

I think the lower scores may be because of how few people are voting. In the hey-day, there were so many more high-average voters, so a few really low scores didn’t always lower the score all that much. Now... with barely 50 votes in any given challenge, one or two overly harsh voters can ruin an overall average. I think critiques are good and make us better. I have had MANY that I have appreciated and learned from. But, I think rude, dogmatically opinionated people do not. And I think their comments make people mad and not want to play. I read some of the rude comments to my husband sometimes, and he says, “I can not understand why you continue subjecting yourself to that site.” Haha! There are tons of things that are so good about DPchallenge... and I've made some great friends, and have learned so much from people I admire... but yeah.... rude opinionated commenters and voters - especially the ones that exact their vindictiveness on the last day of voting... I think you pretty much suck... just saying...

With all due respect: We all like our pictures.
Otherwise we would not post them.
We may not think that they are up to par, yet, but we like 'em.
Like we like our children.

As for your mom. There is only one, so better figure that one out. ;)
And by the way, they do know us better than anyone on this earth.
