and at the same time about all those lockdown centered ones, too.

Perhaps when we are out of lockdown?

I think the Archivals have been positive for the site.

Average entries for the Archival challenges(finished) since 18 March = 92 per challenge
Average entries for non-archival challenges (excluding FS) since 18 March = 33 per challenge

I'd say the archival challenges bring added participation which is surely a good thing.

I'm enjoying the archival challenges. I like going back through my past shots and finding interesting photos I never got around to working on.

Damn, and all this time I was reading it as "Archrival Challenge"!

Introducing weekly Archivals is the best decision of lately. To be honest it makes me more active on DPC again. And clearly I’m not the only one, looking at the participation level. At the moment it’s the only way for me to participate, as I’m not allowed to travel to do some shooting. But even after the lockdown I hope the weekly Archival challenges are going to be continued.

Seriously???

If you don't want to enter, don't.

How hard is that?

As others have mentioned, it's nice to have a chance to enter images that there was no chance of doing previously.

I also enjoy finding hidden gems I had forgotten about as well as revisiting some of my archived images with a different eye to editing than before.

Participation level is up on archival challenges because they're easy. You don't have to do any work except find an image in your archives and do a little post work. You even have a leg up if you have a nice outtake on something that did well previously as you can gauge the audience a little. "Hidden Gem" challenges have always pulled a larger number of entries.

DPChallenge ... has 'Challenge' in it for a reason. Used to be you had one week to obtain an image to submit, for some time now we've had a two week window. Now you have no challenging time limit with archives.

There's plenty of photo contest sites out there that let you enter images without any time constraints, and that's why they're popular. Makes sense for that trend to take hold here at DPC.

If there's any lesson learned here it's to do a better job of archiving your images so you can find what you want later.

I wish there were more Archival Challenges.

I think we should venture into variations, as kirbic suggests: pick your archrival and go for it.

Let's have an Archival challenge on Archrivals!

Please do not stop the archival challenges. Now, that we only go out when it is a necessity, for sure, I wouldn’t go out to make photos. Without the archival challenges, I would not participate in any! Thank you!

We are NOT going to stop these Archival challenges until the Pandemic is behind us. We understand that some of our members think that archival challenges are somehow "anti-DPCish" but, in the aggregate, we feel they've been a good response to the current situation. I'll remind our members that 2 out of every 3 challenges each week are NOT archival and leave it at that.

let me guess... you are NOT on lockdown and you never backed up your hard drive before it crashed.

Well, crowds might have been challenging currently. So that was selected specifically for archival purposes.

I think we who were not the first to peak with this pandemic, US et al, will still be at home for awhile. I'm not scoring well with the archivals, but I am enjoying being able to look through what I have and use them. I CERTAINLY would not have had a crowdscape if we couldn't use them (again, not scoring well but who cares).

I think the participation is up because people who haven't participated in awhile are active. And it's not so easy peasy (for me anyway as I do not have access to all my old images where I am). But it is fun to look back.

funny to see all those couch photographers defending the archival challenges as hell. Most of them do not even enter regular challenges but complain about the low participation (or praise the higher participation).

I am not on lockdown and I lost ALL my originals by mistake (not a HD crash) (I was transferring my RAW AND JPG folders from my 3TB to my new 6TB, when I unplugged the power supply. No big deal but I did a cut and paste. When restarting the HD, I discovered that both files were not there anymore. 5-6 years of originals gone. I can get it back with a deep scan on the HD but it takes way too much time to do this). I still have ALL the modified and edited pictures (those were in another folder), but not valid for entries in DPCPC.
I use Bridge to classify all the pictures and it is very easy to find a specific photo back.
-I do not have archrivals.
-I enter as much, if not all the challenges.
-I do not need someone to tell me if I want to enter or not.
-I do not like Archival challenges. (and Minimal Editing, either)
-I like to joke.
-I like Bear_Music's reply.
-And to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in a different perspective and without being condemning of one's view's and by trying to make it objectified, and by considering each and every one's valid opinion, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say.

I look forward so much to mid week challenges to see what challenge were up against, brings me great joy looking through my photo's from the past, but also makes me itch to travel again, something our GOVT will not allow us to do for we don't know how long. They say maybe 2021 which is a joke really, since we haven't had one new case of Corona in Perth for 8 days!!

Anyway with the archival's I feel like I get to live through my travels over and over again. So PLEASE do not stop them!!

Best not to generalize, I enter all kinds of challenges, even the hated Minimal. Archivals are a nice break from working out how to take photos within the current constraints.

I think that these two are cause and effect. I hope you can see the relationship.

Agree with the generalising. Participation is not just about entering challenges but voting and generally taking part in DPC. I don't enter many challenges - I never have - I don't have the time or inclination normally, but I do vote a lot and last time I checked that's pretty integral to the whole concept of DPC.
