I've used that punny thread title before, but this is an archival challenge, so an archival thread title.

Ok, the generous voter has taken his first stab. You can have a brief high and then watch your scores drop.

You have rated 48 of 94 images (51%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.1042.

Some FABULOUS entries, others, well not so (IMO). But 2 things: 1) there are several images that are very easily recognizable - how do you vote?
2) one image doesn't load for me :-(. I can see the thumbnail when I check on my voting, but it obviously has no score, and when I try to load it is just won't. I will try later again, but any suggestions? Has this happened before? I voted on all others.

My observation over 13 years (have I been on DPC that long?!) is that abstracts don't usually do well with the collective opinion of DPC. If this weren't an abstract specific challenge, those votes would probably be even lower.

I obviously have no idea what an Abstract is, year after year, I don't know why I do this every time a challenge come up!

But it is fun!! =)

And I actually like mine for once! =)

I actually said this out loud this year. I have no idea what an abstract is and mine always flop.

So, I went with the challenge description:

Details: Abstracts are about lines, shapes and colors. If it is recognizable as an object - it is not an abstract.

I spent less than two minutes on the thing, stuck it in, said "Well, at least I've entered"... and of course... it's doing well. *rolleyes*

I'll never understand.

. . .

Another case where the description hinders more than helps, imo.

I had a terrible time even picking an entry because I kept thinking "Standard editing. Can't tell what the object is." and rejecting candidates. For me, those two things knocked out probably 90% of the images I would have considered entering.

And now that I've gone through the entries, I'm pretty much in the same boat as kasaba . A huge number are recognizable and many others appeared to have used digital distortion tools to an extent that I consider to be far outside the bounds of standard editing (and I know it's not my place to decide whether the editing fits the rules or not, but here it's particularly difficult to ignore).

I usually consider an abstract to be unrecognizable.

But if the focus of a recognizable subject is the shapes, color and textures, rather than the subject itself I call it a semi-abstract. There were a handful of entries where I had a hard time deciding if it was or not.

I had one entry in an abstract challenge last year that got a critical comment of being too recognizable. This was one I considered to be semi abstract.

A lot of banter in here AFTER the challenge has gone into the VOTING stage about what is / isn't abstract, opinions, etc. Probably shouldn't be having these conversations now.

That's why my score is so low lol

Wow. I feel a lot better about my glorious 5.1 now! :-)

It is abstract. It is not archival - took it the last day of the challenge. ON PURPOSE. FOR THE CHALLENGE! Ha!

Started out very happy: 6.4 with 5 votes.

Down to 5.9

And yeah -- I had a problem with the definition. I don't believe that it has to be unrecognizable to be abstract.

I prefer wikipedia's definition: Abstract art uses visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world

Hopefully that means it's abstract enough.

Same here -- it was too difficult to find old abstracts! I really should keyword. :(
