We're acutely aware that the global pandemic is affecting all of us to a greater or lesser degree as we go about our lives. Our Italian members, for example, are basically restricted to their homes for the duration. It looks like everybody will get slammed by this sooner or later :-(

Obviously, DPC issues are not foremost in anyone's mind right now, but for what it's worth we have decided to schedule at least one challenge a week, usually the open challenge, as an ARCHIVAL challenge so those who can't get out can still participate. We'll also try to schedule more challenges that can be shot in the home.

Hopefully everyone's OK? Certainly, there's been ZERO mention of the Pandemic in the forums, but that doesn't mean much....

Anyway, good luck everyone and soldier on!

That sounds like a good response. At the moment my husband and I are practising 'social distancing' but it could very soon be lock down.

Great idea! It's important to nourish our souls during such stressful times! Being creative does that for me.

I love this idea of having challenges that can be shot in a home or a small yard.

Well thought, Bear!

Great idea, Switzerland has closed down. People are supposed to stay at home although at this stage it is a recommendation, not an order. We are determined to have some exercise and go for walks and bicycle rides, I hope we won't get arrested in future. We will obviously stay away from other people.

I just can't believe what I just wrote!!

You are on a ball, Bear, and stay away from people, please.

We are expecting "the lockdown" any time now. It is a stressful time for everyone. Great idea on the home and yard challenges. As someone has already mentioned, this will be a great diversion from the chaos going on around us. Stay safe everyone.

The SF Bay Area (6 counties) is already under a three-week shelter in place order.

It is what is is at this point, I reckon.

I say, stay home and enjoy the time. No need to go out and either infect others or get infected. I’d rather stay at home than carry the virus I don’t know that I have ...to ... some grandmother... someone who’s on cancer treatment... someone with... etc.

More time to shoot for new topics, right?

For sure...Tough times, if we let them be, but...

I’m trying to stay positive and will enjoy more time to shoot stuff for new challenges.

We will get through this. Hopefully as closer humanity.

Let’s SHOOT!!

:)

Fantastic attitude Bear - thank you DPC.

We have a "State of National Disaster" - nobody really knows what that means, we are encouraged to practice social distancing, our schools are closed, all gatherings with more than 100 people are forbidden, our borders are largely closed.

I hate to write this, but I am sooooo tired of this hype. Don't misunderstand, I am all for being careful and mindfulness, including social distancing, I understand the need to flatten the curve of infection rate, I just don't get the Hysteria. Doctor friend of mine told me yesterday, they have 160 000 influenza deaths annually in Italy - nobody gets hysterical about that. There are vaccines for the Influenza, but only 8% of the population get them, despite the high number of deaths, and now we go into a total panic about this?

Stay safe everyone, stay healthy, but pls don't get hysterical.

Like you said, it's just about flattening the curve so health care doesn't get overwhelmed like it did in Italy and elsewhere. Hype seems to be the only way to do that. Plus it allows you to buy Disney stock at a great price.

I agree with you, one can get tired of hearing about Corona.

However, I think there are a few factors that should be considered.

It is correct that other diseases with quite a death toll didn't get comparable attention in the past, such as Malaria or TBC. However I don't think that the approach of "we don't care about those deaths, why do we care now" is too helpful. I think it should be more like: "we do care now (for whatever reason), we should in the future care about these others more". I'm sure many will agree with me on that. And maybe there will be a change of attitude when the current pandemic is overcome.

But I do think that this current pandemic is different from Influenza, and therefore the measures taken are justified.

One thing - the number of 160,000 deaths per year from Influenza in Italy seems far too high. What I found in a little research was that in 2016/2017 25,000 died from Influenza in Italy, and about the same number, 25,000, in Germany in 2017/2018. The mortality rate from Influenza is estimated at about 0.1 percent.

Currently, the mortality rate from Covid19 is hard to state, because we probably know the number of deaths pretty acurately, but this is not true about the number of people infected. There is the number of people with a positive test, but there may be many more who have the disease. This means that the current calulated rate of 1 to 5 percent is actually lower. But I think one can still assume that it is higher than that of influenza.

Then there is the fact that there is a vaccination for Influenza, but none for Corona. True, not everyone got a flu shot, but still, a lot of people did. It is not a 100 % protection, but it does help. There is a medication, Tamiflu, although I don't know how much it helps. In any event, there is currently none at all for Corona.

Corona is entirely knew, so nobody is immune. That means that more people can contract the disease. If one calculates that 50 % of a populace get the disease and of those 0.1 Percent die, than for Germany that would mean roughly 40.000.000 people sick and 40.000 dead. If the rate is 1 percent, then it's 400.000 deaths. Take the doubling rate of numbers infected of currently 2 - 3 days into consideration, then without effective measures, these numbers would be reached within the next few months.

These are huge numbers that the health care system can't deal with. That is why I think extraordinary measures are justified to mitigate the impact.

And after all, these numbers are about individuals who will be missed by their families.

Stay healthy!

Time will tell who was right - UK style small and slow steps, or Singapore style aggressive finding every case and tracing all people who were in contact with a sick person and putting them into a compulsory 2-week quarantine. Singapore seems to have upper hand at the moment with no deaths and a very small number of cases but they are a very small country where such measures are easier to implement.

The flu is more difficult to control as the viruses mutate every year, that's why a new vaccine is need for each flu season. In many countries vaccines for flu are free for over 65 years old or are covered by health insurance for younger people. Why such small take up of vaccination? Probably a combination of laziness and anti-vaccine sentiment.

Once there is a vaccine for Covid-19 we will need it only once like for measles as the virus does not mutate according to the current scientific knowledge. Holding all fingers we get it soon before millions die. Say only 10% of the world population get Covid-19 - 770 million, 1% death rate that's 7.7 million dead. Should we care about them? What if the infection rate is 30%? Nobody can predict this at the moment.

While the bombardment of the news about coronavirus is very tiring and unsettling, most people in Switzerland are very rational, definitely not hysterical. I went to a bakery and a farm shop today, they both were very well organized with sellers wearing gloves, using disinfectant between customers, and the people in the queue (very short) standing on marked yellow lines and obeying the distances and the rule of one person in a shop at a time. No cash, only credit cards or Twint (payment by phone). And everybody was OK with that, in fact we were relieved as we have given up on large supermarkets where such measures are not possible.

This thing sucks....

I'm one of the people with the giant bullseye on him.

64, overweight, out of shape, smoker, asthma, allergies, probably diabetic but don't go to the doctor, no medical insurance, and I don't have a job where I get any benefits or unemployment, or a paycheck for that matter, if I don't work.

I'm also one of those people who for better or worse, has always been rersponsible for the direction his life has taken, and in most cases, have been able to hunker down and deal with whatever life has thrown in my path.

Coronavirus???

There's nothing I can do if the sucker puts me in its crosshairs.

Frankly, I'm terrified. But I can't let that rule my life, either.

I still have work and bills, so I kind of have to just keep on keepin' on.

Oddly enough, I'm enjoying participating in challenges to help distract me.

Y'all do your best to stay safe and healthy.

I did just find out that what I do, automotive service & repair, is considered an essential service, so my job is intact for a while yet anyway.

That also means I'm out here in the big, bad world....

It is weird. I thought there will be more people voting and entering as almost everybody by now is stuck at home but it is not the case. Why? Why don't you participate?

Here in Taiwan we still need to work and can go out as normal. Mass gatherings are cancelled. Stores are still full everywhere , but many people do prepare for a possible outbreak. Till now we have not been infected. All cases are imported and under control. Only 2 deaths, Taiwan has a population of 23 millions.
